Bully Reviews

Below is a post we published on July 17, 2012 to show our readers exactly what we meant by personal attacks on authors in reviews.  It was because of these reviews and the attention our blog received from our HuffPo article (post to come) that GR was forced to act and publicly publish their Terms of Service clarifying their reviewing policies.

**************************************************************************************

For today’s post, we want to show you some screencaps of reviews we deem inappropriate, or bully reviews.  Please note, the purpose of this site is not to fight against critical reviews.  It is to fight against bullying.  We are presenting these to you because we have had a few requests for what we consider inappropriate.  Why do we consider them inappropriate?  A book review is, strangely enough, a review of a BOOK and yet these “reviewers” just cannot seem to stop talking about authors.  So instead of telling you about bully reviews, we will show you.

But we saved the best for last.  This review was written by a GR bully named Blythe who attacked and harassed a 14 year old girl for taking offense to Blythe’s language because, get this, Blythe is an 8th grade English teacher.  Below are couple excerpts from Blythe’s review:

BlythesReview1

BlythesReview2

Michelle, the 14 year old, wrote in her review:

MichellesReview

To which Blythe responded in her own review at the bottom:

BlythesEdits

Then Blythe rallied the bullies and attacked Michelle on the comment thread of Michelle’s review.  Archer, one of the three ringleaders, left this comment to Michelle:

ArchersResponse

Okay, so, breathe slowly and let’s recap.  Lady Blythe is an 8th grade English teacher who lives in California.  Archer is a 20-something man who lives in Australia.  And this is how they treat a 14 year old girl.

Are you disgusted yet?

Wait!  There’s more.  Let’s check out Goodreads terms of service where it specifically talks about children and inappropriate content.  If a person creates an account on Goodreads, he or she has to agree to these terms:

You agree not to post User Content that: (i) may create a risk of harm, loss, physical or mental injury, emotional distress, death, disability, disfigurement, or physical or mental illness to you, to any other person, or to any animal; (ii) may create a risk of any other loss or damage to any person or property; (iii) seeks to harm or exploit children by exposing them to inappropriate content, asking for personally identifiable details or otherwise; (iv) may constitute or contribute to a crime or tort; (v) contains any information or content that we deem to be unlawful, harmful, abusive, racially or ethnically offensive, defamatory, infringing, invasive of personal privacy or publicity rights, harassing, humiliating to other people (publicly or otherwise), libelous, threatening, profane, or otherwise objectionable; (vi) contains any information or content that is illegal (including, without limitation, the disclosure of insider information under securities law or of another party’s trade secrets); or (vii) contains any information or content that you do not have a right to make available under any law or under contractual or fiduciary relationships; or (viii) contains any information or content that you know is not correct and current.

So, do you think Goodreads is enforcing its TOS?  From the evidence above, I’d say not.

Strange News

Okay, we just saw the weirdest thing happen today.  We’ve been getting several messages about an article written by Jonathon Gunson titled, Why Every Author Must Be on Goodreads in 2013.

Title

The article goes on to tell the reader exactly why, talking about the recent membership explosion and the “sales power of reviews”, etc. etc.

Excerpt

Then at the bottom, readers left all kinds of comments praising Goodreads, praising Jonathon’s post and praising his success as a bestselling author.

Okay, so, this isn’t what was weird.  What was weird was what happened shortly after.  Other visitors left comments warning him and other authors about the dangers of GR – about the personal attacks on authors, the trolling, the fake reviews, the toxic environment etc.  None of the comments were incendiary or defamatory or “personal” as Jonathon claimed.  They were just stating an opinion and warning others.

Then, we were tipped off by Goronwy that Anna Karenina, a well-known BBG, stepped into it:

Whoa! I see Anna Karenina has responded to the critics and defended Goodreads! Does she work for Goodreads?

After that, there were some exchanges (you can imagine) and like Digital Book World, Jonathon started removing the nasty comments.  But he didn’t stop there.  He kept removing comments, even the comments that had originally been there.  The comments that were warning people about GR.  The only one he left up was this one:

RobertAdama

Then, someone named Jon confronted him about deleting comments and he said:

Jon1

It was obvious this was BS because the comments that had been there were definitely legit.  Dissenting but legit.  A few minutes later, we got this message from MT:

I’m a bit confused about Mr. Gunson’s Goodreads post. I looked up his author account on Goodreads of which he speaks so highly of, and I found his profile and book listings questionable. He has not updated any of his info or has made any posts. He has not uploaded product, author, or book links at all. His books don’t even have cover art. Given he recommended Goodreads without any understanding of how it works says a bit about his practice. I think his post was basically an attempt to gain buyers for his how to use twitter books and his goodreads post is to help qualify him as an professional. That’s my take on him. I think your link back to his website completely derailed his attempts to gain more readers. lol. I’m sure he just landed himself a blip on the BBA radar.

And then MT left this:

Correction. He hasn’t even joined goodreads under an author account. WTF.

And then this:

I know… I almost wish I didn’t look now. Not only does he NOT have a Goodreads account, NONE of his How to Twitter for Author books are listed on Goodreads nor his FREE Author Guide… The WTF’s just keep coming.

So we went to Jonathon’s GR author page and found that MT was exactly right:

JGonGR

We doubled checked to see if it was the same Jonathon Gunson and found this on his :

FBpage

You see.  Definitely the same guy.

So… so… I guess every author must be on Goodreads, except Jonathon Gunson?  Huh?  *scratches head*

But hold on because that’s not all.  We went back to Jonathon’s article and found these two comments that were left:

Jon2

Guess what.  That’s right!  These two comments are no longer there.

Hmm… wonder what this guy’s afraid of.

Now, when I asked Athena if I could write a post about this, she said yes, but on one condition.  That I make it clear to everyone that STGRB sees Goodreads as a good place for authors if they know who to avoid and what to look out for.  If an author already knows the territory, they can have a positive experience there.  But if they don’t know (as most new authors don’t), it can be a hell.  And we all agree that GR would be a great place if the GR bullies didn’t exist (and the sexual content that we just learned about recently from Carroll.)  In fact, if these two things were suddenly wiped off the face of GR (the bullies and the harmful content for kids), we would agree with Jonathon wholeheartedly.  In that case, every author would definitely need to be on GR.

We’ve had another request from a site visitor to post his/her opinion piece on our blog.  Below, Anonymous expresses his/her views on Goodreads’ recent growth, its independent authors, and what is happening to them.

**************************************************************************************

Goodreads likes to think of itself as a social cataloging site for bibliophiles, but its recent phenomenal growth can’t be put down to 12 million people wanting to catalog their books online. Other sites let you do that but have only a fraction of the membership. So what accounts for the fact that Goodreads more than doubled its membership between 2011 and 2012, and looks set to do the same in 2013?

My guess is that a tidal wave of self-published authors has been joining. Back in 2006, when Goodreads was founded, the notion that you could market a book to bestsellerdom using social media (see Amanda Hocking) was new and unheard of. Now it has finally trickled down to the masses, to the point that it’s now part of every indie’s received folk-wisdom, no matter how naive he or she might otherwise be. And Goodreads is always named as a good site to join if you want to schmooze about books.

But this sudden growth in Goodreads membership has brought another problem to the fore: that of amateur reviewers. It’s possible that Goodreads’ founders really did think that the site would be a great place for ordinary book lovers to congregate and swap opinions about books, but they were unprepared for other developments. Some reviewers were quick to realize the power Goodreads gave them, and were not shy about exploiting it. They realized they could review books they hadn’t read, or shelve books under abusive labels, and Goodreads didn’t object to the practise. Some reviewers were book bloggers with their own blogs, and quickly saw that Goodreads could be used to amplify attempts to favor certain writers and undermine others. So they started to use the review system to advance personal agendas, settling scores, and even for entertainment– baiting authors to see how they would react. And they haven’t stopped at Goodreads, but have extended their reach to all social media: now whatever an author says on Twitter, Facebook or elsewhere is fair game.

Most writers who hang around on Goodreads are self-published and new to the business, so they make easy marks. They’re oblivious to the politics and the personalities. A lot of them don’t seem to realize that there’s a power imbalance, and it’s not in their favor. A reviewer can trash an author’s book and call all his or her friends in to do the same, but an author can’t really do anything to a reviewer. Too many authors think they can respond to reviews, or even merely disagree with a reviewer in a public conversation without suffering consequences. They don’t see the lynch mob gathering until it’s too late, and many have suffered for it.

But is this a good development for Goodreads? Goodreads doesn’t make money off reviewers, it makes money off writers. It’s writers who pay to advertise there, not reviewers. For comparison, look at Librarything: it charges users if they want to catalog more than 200 books, and has less than one tenth of Goodreads membership. Readers aren’t anxious to pay for the privilege of joining a book cataloging site, even though Librarything has some features which make it a far better place for bibliophiles to socialize.

Goodreads probably figures that the supply of eager indies will never dry up, so it doesn’t really matter to its bottom line if some of them are driven away. But what if the word gets out that Goodreads is becoming a place where writers are attacked if they piss off a reviewer? What if it gets out that there are book bloggers out there who use authors as bait to drive up traffic to their blogs? Will authors still keep flocking to Goodreads, or will they find less angst-ridden ways of promoting their work? If enough authors come to the realization that Goodreads is a dangerous place, it could be the start of a sea-change in the way social media is used to market books.

Below is an opinion piece written by a site visitor who asked us of he/she could share his/her thoughts about the bullies on our blog.  We want our readers to know that if they have something they want to share and wish to write an opinion piece, they are welcome to do so and submit it to Athena via Contact Us for approval.

Is Being Evil a Handicap? (An Opinion Piece)

By Anonymous

Is being evil a handicap? This is a question that I would like to pose to readers of this excellent blog, for they are dealing with evil every day as they battle the internet trolls who strive to steal their peace, their livelihoods, and their happiness. After all, what else do you call such life-sucking vampires but pure Evil? Evil strives to hurt and to harm. Evil does not have good intentions. Evil seeks to destroy. But, admittedly (and unfortunately), evil also has a power all its own. It exists, and there are people who have always been drawn to it throughout history. There are people who grow stronger from the pain they inflict, who enjoy and thrive on it. There are people who hide behind masks of sanity who are, in reality, cold-hearted through and through. We all know such people when we encounter them, because of how they make us feel, even if they look and behave normally to the outside world. We know them because of the destruction they leave in their wake. In days gone by, these people would’ve been ostracized by their community for their behavior. Now many of them hide, undetected, behind computer screens, typing away in the flickering light, hunched in the dark, their insanity raging behind “well-written” one-star reviews and scathing attacks designed to destroy author’s careers. They make vitriolic personal posts intended to strike at the core of another human being’s heart; they attack all that is near and dear to another person; they stalk, harass, belittle, name-call, and gather like-minded bullies to destroy whomever is their next target. They do not care about the real people they harm, or the families hurt by their attacks. They don’t see the aftermath of their behavior, nor do they care. They hide behind “free speech.” They hide behind anonymous IP addresses. They hide behind fake Amazon accounts. But their intention is the same: to harm and destroy.

Intention is everything. Every sane human being has the capability to look inside oneself and ask what his / her intention is behind every choice, decision, and action. Every sane human being has the capacity to feel compassion. Every sane human being has the capability to amend the error of his / her ways after realizing he / she has made wrong choices.

Insane people cannot. Evil people WILL not.

Combine an insane person, such as one of the bullies STGRB frequently profiles who is no different from the typical frothing, eye-rolling, obscenity-screaming bag lady one sees on the street, and an evil one, such as a hate-filled, bent-on-destruction bully, and you have an entity all its own. A frightening, destructive one. The best way to deal with that type of person is to recognize what you are dealing with and head the other way when you see him / her coming your way. That is why this blog provides such a good service with the bright light it shines on such individuals: the layperson is now able to recognize the evil, often faceless bully on the internet, and utilize self-protection.

Which brings me back to the topic at hand: Is being evil a handicap in its own right?

For proud handicapped persons such as one of our other bullies (often featured on STGRB), they might say it is, and a badge of honor at that. After all, this particular bully is often seen around the web using her handicap to bully others. I’ve seen her on too many blogs boasting about her handicap, using it to garner sympathy, and then using it as a whipping stick to shut down people who disagree with her. When a disagreement gets heated (usually after this bully becomes vicious and starts attacking and name-calling), she will ultimately resort to pulling out her “handicap card” to shut people up: “I’m handicapped and you’re an ableist insulting me and you don’t know what you’re talking about, so shut the eff up” (paraphrasing here). It usually works because most people are respectful and have some degree of compassion, unlike this bully herself. In my opinion, this bully is a dual-handicap person, someone who exhibits a lack of compassion as one of her challenges. I have never once seen her apologize or take responsibility for any of her harmful actions on the internet. In fact, the more publicity she gets, the more she brags about her “strong” personality. Yeah, right. Her hateful one, is more like it. For all the people who have encountered her terrible attacks, her relentless pursuit of destruction, her rage-filled fixation on anyone she feels has wronged her, her organized lynch mobs against innocent people, and her drunk-with-power online identity, you know what I’m talking about. She is ruthless, and proud of it. And she appears to be completely devoid of conscience about her actions. That, in my opinion, is the true definition of Evil.

These bullies will likely say this blog is discriminating against them with this post. They will say this blog is ableist and hates handicapped people. This is not true. This blog post is my opinion, as a simple contributor. Simple as that. And from what I know of STGRB, this blog despises evil people and the destruction they leave in their wake. This blog champions the victims of soulless predators and evil-doers who seek to harm people’s lives, dreams, and livelihoods. This blog doesn’t hide from the truth, or from shining a light on cruel people bent on destruction, even if such people sit in a wheelchair or are psychologically unbalanced. Bully #1’s physical handicap or Bully #2’s self-professed mental instability do not, in of themselves, harm others (in fact, they could be a source of great learning and inspiration for us all, if those two people had any sense at all). But their handicap of evil DOES harm others, and that is why they have ended up on this site. Basically, from how I can see it, STGRB is an equal-opportunity bully offender, and should be proud of it. The site does not discriminate, clearly. 😉

In conclusion, I once again ask the question: Is being evil a handicap?

I would say it is. It prevents an individual from being a decent, kind person. It prevents a human being from reaching their full positive potential here on earth. I am sure being evilly handicapped denies the person from experiencing true happiness. It would be sad, terribly sad, if it weren’t so harmful to everyone around them . . . and deliberately so.

Psychopathy (or sociopathy), by most psychiatric definitions, is the only true measurement of real evil out there. It is, quite simply, defined as a lack of conscience. And that lack of conscience is demonstrated in many ways, often hidden. So how do we fully recognize it, we ask? Well, it’s pretty clear: it is the INTENT TO CAUSE HARM WITH NO CONSCIENCE ABOUT THE DESTRUCTIVE RESULT OF ONE’S OWN ACTIONS, whether it’s trying to destroy a writer’s career with fake one-star reviews, or murdering someone in cold blood. And not having a soul—or heart—is probably the biggest handicap a human being can have.

Just recently we received this comment from an Anon:

Here’s an interesting post from a successful author about why she replies to book reviews. She wrote multiple posts about this for Digital Book World. On one of them (I think the second post here), she goes into more depth for her reasons. Of course, Ridley and her cohorts jump in and start berating the author, who continues to behave respectfully. The owner of DBW finally deleted some of Ridley’s posts and reprimanded her and the other bullies about behaving respectfully (something they clearly are incapable of doing). It shows how ridiculous and insane these bullies are so clearly!

http://www.digitalbookworld.com/2012/when-you-wish-upon-a-star-you-get-the-pointy-end-why-authors-should-always-respond-to-negative-reviews/

The article in question is titled: When You Wish Upon a Star, You Get the Pointy End (Part 1): Why Authors Should ALWAYS Respond To Negative Reviews.  In it, author Elle Lothlorien describes her philosophy on responding to reviews by readers in a business-like way.  Treating readers as customers and trying to improve their experience of an author’s product.

Below are some screenshots we took of the people who left the author comments.  Recognize any names?  BBG list anyone?  We think it is telling that Digital Book World had to reprimand them for verbally attacking the author with name-calling and personal insults.  Some of the comments were even deleted as a result and you’ll notice that the bullies then went after DBW for doing this.  This is just further proof of what we have been saying about these people for so long.

Now, we think that what Elle is saying in her post is perfectly rational and logical.  Treat your readers as customers.  Most reader/reviewers who are not bullies, who do not intend to be abusive and who are writing an honest, critical analysis of a book will not feel intimidated by Elle’s philosophy (although it is always a good idea to make sure they are comfortable with talking to the author, just in case).  So, why does it intimidate the bullies so much?  Simple.  The bullies want to be bullies.  They want to be mean and nasty and vulgar.  They’re not interested in an author improving the book for them because they either don’t care or they don’t want to read something they’ll like.  They want to read something they’ll hate, so they can continue to be mean and nasty.  When they are presented with the author’s polite questions, they remember that they are dealing with a human being and suddenly they develop a conscience that tells them that being a bully is wrong.  Since they will never admit that they’re wrong, instead of getting angry at themselves for what they’re doing, they get angry at anyone who suggests such a horrible crime or who tries to reprimand them for their behavior (i.e. Elle and Digital Book World in this case).

Thank you, Anon, for sharing Elle’s post with us.  And everyone else, keep ‘em coming.  The more proof we can show, the more educated people will be.

The World Is What You Make It

Well, well, well.  It looks like little Miss Kat managed to get over her bout of drama sickness.  After six months of remaining fairly silent in the bully community (no surprise there), Kat has all the sudden broken her silence and written about the whole affair regarding the bully attack on Sharon Desruisseaux.  Couldn’t stay away from drama for long, could she?

In her , Kat publishes Sharon’s words from her post,  and then proceeds to tell Sharon the “facts”.  *snort*

Facts?  Right.  Let’s go over those “facts”.

Fact1

Fact1Cont

So, Kat, you think the bullies have better things to do with their time than to hate on authors and books for fun?  Really?

Wrong.

GreenButton1

You see this kind of thing happen on Dear Author ALL THE TIME.  In fact, let’s all take a look at this review.  It’s a review (written by January Jane) of Spoils of War by Phoenix Sullivan, an independent author.  When you read it along with the comments that follow, you see that not only do the bullies do this for fun, they do it so they will get a rise out of an author and start a bully attack just so they can label the author BBA.  We call it the Catch on our Bully MO page.  It’s another way they bait authors.  They relish in this kind of thing.  Here’s a screenshot of one of the commenters saying that she contacted the author to solicit her response:

GettingAuthorInvolved

Here’s another saying she wants to leave a one-star review on Amazon (without reading the book and without even writing an actual review) and just link to Jane’s review on Dear Author:

OneStarWithoutReading

At the end of the review, Jane says that she wanted to give the book “a better grade lest all the January reviews seem like endless hate.”

End

Right.  She wanted to give the book a better grade and then states how she would also like to give the book less than an F.  Not a contradictory statement at all.

Now, getting back to Kat and her uh… “facts”, why is it easy to believe that these people are bored haters who like to hate on authors and books for fun?  The answer is simple.  Because it’s true.

Fact #2:

Fact2

We agree, an honest opinion of a BOOK isn’t bullying.  But a dishonest review to get revenge on an author, or a review that bashes the author, or even worse, a review made with the intention of baiting an author into a fight IS bullying.  And the bullies do these kinds of things all the time.  We’ve shown proof of this on our blog and we will continue to show proof of it.

Fact 3#:

Fact3

Yeah, that’s right, Kat.  You keep telling yourself that if it makes you feel better.  We weren’t the ones who made complete asses of ourselves during the GR Bully Meltdown.  That was you and your band of cronies, remember?  No wonder you’ve been silent for months.

No one takes us seriously, huh?  Only organizations like The Huffington Post, USA TodayForbes, and Goodereader, but really, they’re nobodies.  Right?

Fact #4:

Fact4

What Kat fails to mention is that this author, at that time, believed Lucy’s lie, as many people did.  Once we pointed to the fact that Lucy never took the number to the police to have them investigate it and that there was no one who could corroborate her story (as Andrew Losowsky, the books editor of The Huffington Post noted), then people started to see the truth.  Why didn’t Lucy go to the police and why wasn’t there anyone to corroborate her story?  The answer is simple.  Because no one called her.  She was lying.  After this, Athena contacted the author in question and found out that she had started writing again.  So, nice try, Kat, but you fail.

Now, overall, we don’t have a problem with the way people treat books.  We have a problem with the way people treat other PEOPLE.  This is something that the bullies never seem to understand.  We don’t care what Sharon originally wrote on her blog about a particular review of one of her books and as we see it, she has a right to write what she wants without being harassed for it.  It’s her blog.  Our beef is with what the bullies are doing to her personally.  The whole BBA mentality.  Name calling.  The boycotting.  The harassing.  All this childish bullshit for which they are famous.  Our beef is with them coming into her space and harassing her for an opinion or an emotion she wanted to express ON HER OWN BLOG.  After all, isn’t everyone allowed freedom of speech?  This is the same thing that happened to Claude Bouchard and Lynne Copeland (posts to come) and it’s crap.  This constant bashing and bullying of other people is a growing problem on the internet and it’s something we would never try to justify with words like this:

WorldIsHarsh

This is what Kat writes at the end of her post.  The world is a harsh place and people are cruel.  Deal with it.  This is how Kat justifies bullying.  It’s funny – it’s always the people who are cruel to others who try to justify their behavior with this statement.

Okay, Kat, so the world is harsh and we just need to deal with it, right?  So, should Charles Manson have gotten up in front of the court and said: “Hey, the world is harsh and people are cruel.  So am I.  You all just need to deal with it.”  Or how about all those children who are abused?  Should we just tell them that the world is a harsh place and they just need to deal?  How about when they grow up and raid their grandfather’s arsenal so they can go to school and blow away their classmates?  Should we justify that by saying that people are cruel and the world is harsh and we just need to move on?

Sorry, Kat, but once again, you fail.  You want to justify your behavior by saying the world is harsh and people are cruel and that we just need to deal with it?  Well, guess what.  We call bullshit.  Only people who want to justify abuse say that.  The world is what you make it.  Period.

And you can say all you want about our blog.  It doesn’t make it true.  And it doesn’t change the fact that you’re as big a bully now as you were six months ago.  The only thing that’s different now is that everyone knows it.

Okay, before we get into GR Bully Meltdown Part II, Athena wanted me to re-iterate for everyone that we don’t encourage anyone to attack an author’s book if that author is on our BBG list.  In fact, we’ve said it before and we’ll say it again, we don’t encourage anyone to contact or harass these people in anyway.  We are simply here to report on their behavior.  I know we’ve joked around a lot on this blog, but in all seriousness, we hope we’ve never given anyone the impression that we think this is okay.  In fact, we’ve stated this on our Who We Are page and if you read our Do’s and Don’t’s page, we say:

If you are ever the victim of a bully attack, don’t:

1. Panic

2. Respond

3. Fight back

4. Retaliate by writing revenge reviews (if the bullies are authors, many of them are)

And this isn’t just for victims, this is for everyone.  We don’t recommend getting into it with the bullies.  We just recommend avoiding them.

So, getting back to part two of the GR Bully Meltdown.  The post below, we published on August 19, 2012.  We’re posting the GR Bully Meltdown now because the two posts are relevant to a new one we have coming soon.  If you haven’t read The GR Bully Meltdown, Part I, we recommend doing so.  In the following post, we mention a few we did before this one: one on Anna Karenina, one called GR Rolls ‘Em Out, and an interview with Kenya Wright.  All these will be coming up shortly, so don’t worry.

Now, on with the Meltdown…

**************************************************************************************

Okay, we’re back for part two of the GR Bully Meltdown.  Ready your popcorn, or your wine & cheese, or whatever your pleasure, because this one is going to be fun!

Ever since Kat and Ridley’s cat fight in GR Rolls ‘Em Out, we’ve been watching and waiting.  Now, we realize that their little spat back then was just a warm up, because the snakes are really starting to eat each other.  On our last post, The Many Faces of Anna Karenina, we were tipped off by our site visitor, Mushrooms:

Read the article, then scroll down to where you see Ridley and her minions speaking about their disdain towards Cuddleboogery, Kat, and Archer under the Conversations On Twitter. I wonder if they realize that their tweets are showing up on the website… lol.

I find it very funny how they’re all turning on each other. It would be a good idea to create a new blog post around this subject.”

Then Mushrooms says:

“Ridley has tweeted a bit more about the situation. Apparently the people of Cuddlebuggery have blocked her on twitter. She has also retweeted two comments made against the blog revolving over their twitter conversation being linked to the site. There happens to be other people joining in the feud. People like Blythe H., Kara, Lyn, and Jessie have decided to side with Cuddlebuggery against Ridley and her minions. They’re calling people like Ridley and her followers the real trolls now. From the looks of the newest tweets from Kat, Blythe H., Archer, Steph (on the cuddlebuggery account) and some others, they’re attempting to have some private group chat to discuss their current situation in private with one another.

They’re falling into this deeper and deeper. One by one the bullies unity have started to crumble. No authors are involved this time, this is their own doing.

One of the users twitter account. You can follow along with what’s going on from there. From the looks of it, they don’t plan on stopping their twitter war anytime soon.”

Alright, for a little background – Cuddleboogery just changed its commenting system so that if a visitor logs on with their twitter account and then later references the site while tweeting, that person’s twitter conversation gets recorded into the comments of Cuddleboog.  Okay so, you with me so far?  Good.  Now on to the good stuff.

Well, apparently, Ridley wasn’t aware of that when she referenced Archer’s latest blog post here:

RidleyFuckYouToArcher

And then the recording commenced.  So, we took these screenshots from Cuddleboog before they were deleted:

This is where they realize they’re being recorded:

Then Camp Cuddleboog gets smart, because they know we’re watching, and decide to go into a private chat:

And finally back to Camp Cuddleboog where they try to cut the cord to Ridley but fail:

Aw, poor Cuddleboog.  But here’s another interesting conversation:

Bookish Belle says: “That’s ridiculous.  Like you can’t express your opinion on your own blog.”

Yeah, imagine that – other people thinking you don’t have a right to express your opinion on your own blog or that you don’t have a right to freedom of speech.  Who would ever think something like that?  Oh I don’t know.  Maybe… ALL of them.  They’ve been saying this about us forever.  But unfortunately for them, we have rights, too.

And finally, here is Ann on Cuddleboog calling us a “shitty site”:

Hey, it’s not our fault your rotten house of bully is burning to the ground. You did that to yourselves.  But thanks for the new name!  Now, in addition to being “the site that must not be named,” and “that heinous site,” we are also “that shitty site.”  Alright!

Okay, we’re going to switch gears for a minute but there’s a reason.  Do you all remember the Q&A we did with Kenya Wright?  Well, there was a section that was edited out of that Q&A and people have been asking us about it, so we’ll show you what it was:

Stacia Kane is an author that is adamant that authors should stay silent when it comes to reviews. I asked her to comment about the site “Stop the GR Bullies.” This is the comment:

I’m so tired of the sense of entitlement on the part of authors who feel like readers have some responsibility to them or owe them something. I’m tired of seeing that entitlement oozing all over every discussion of reviews or review sites or blogs or whatever else. It starts with “reviews should be constructive (because they’re all about SERVING MEEEEE)” and ends with “You guys are just mean bullies!” and outing people. Last time I checked the president of Nestle didn’t feel the need to create mean little websites outing people who prefer Hersheys. You know why? Because he’s a damned professional.

“Authors” who pull this crap need to spend less time having hissyfits and more time writing better books.

I’m sure the nasty reviews of my books will start soon, but oh well. I think readers are smart enough to tell the difference between honest reviews and those that aren’t.

What is your response to Stacia’s comment?

STGRB: If Stacia is referring to our site, we will say it again.  Our site is not about critical reviews.  It is about bullying.

Now, if we are just discussing the topic of authors and reviews, we will say this.  Anybody who is invested in one’s career will take that career seriously and protect it from those who try to destroy it either for their own personal fun or for vengeance.  If that is considered sense of entitlement to Stacia Kane, then so be it.  Yes, it is good practice to stay silent on constructive reviews and not nitpick negative reviews to death or take them too personally.  We both agree on that.

However, where we differ is that we adamantly DO NOT AGREE that authors should stay silent when their careers, livelihoods, and personal dreams are being slandered or threatened.  That is what we are talking about here, not run-of-the-mill negative reviews.  Show us a person alive who will sit back quietly and allow someone else to destroy the career they’ve worked so hard on, the one that supports their families, and we’ll show you someone who will be standing in the unemployment line.  This is not about those readers who post reviews describing why they did or did not like a book.  This is about the minority who actively band together to try and destroy careers under the guise of “honest, critical reviews.”  True honest, critical reviews are acceptable (and welcomed).  Career-destroying is not.

I also reached out to Kat Kennedy. This is her comment:

Unfortunately, there is no winning.  Nobody comes out of this not looking like an asshole.  It shames our community, it embarrasses us, and it makes us look stupid.  I prefer to spend my time working with authors to help promote their books and give them exposure than play character games.

What these people are doing is cowardly, sad, and ultimately a poor reflection on the state of our community.  However, through these threats and attacks, we’ve seen the community band together and show the kind of strength and greatness that reminds me of why I love being a book blogger and a Young Adult reviewer.

What is your response?

STGRB: It appears as though Kat Kennedy has toned herself down a bit from her usual nasty responses.  Maybe this is because she has a soon-to-be released book to promote?  Now that she will be on the other side of things, as an author, we wonder if she will have the guts to publish under her own name?  And if so, how she will respond if any of her bully-cronies target her book and career?  Also, we’re curious to know if her publisher stands by the brand she is building as an author and internet persona.

Furthermore, we came up with the idea for our site by watching Kat Kennedy on her blog (see answer above).  If she thinks what we do is “cowardly, sad, and ultimately a poor reflection on the state of our community,” then she really needs to take a serious look at her own behavior.

In case you’re wondering, the question about how we got our idea for the site was this:

Who came up with the idea for this site? When did the idea pop up? What truly sparked this?

STGRB: A community of writers, readers, and everyone in between has been slowly gathering to address what is happening on Goodreads.  It is an underground movement that is growing exponentially every day as more and more people find us.  More people have been harmed by the GR bullies than we ever knew.  We knew there were a lot who had had terrible experiences (or witnessed them) and left the site, but we had no idea how many.

As for our small group of members who run the site, we got the idea by watching Kat Kennedy on Cuddlebuggery Book Blog.  With every Scandalous Scandal post, she profiles authors that the bullies want to target and sends the lynch mob after them.  She doesn’t just profile authors either.  For example, she wrote a post on The Story Siren and convinced her followers to boycott the blog.  So, this is really where we got the idea.  Of course we are not trying to send a lynch mob after these bullies.  We just want to call them out and create awareness about who they are and what they do.

“Nobody comes out of this not looking like an asshole.”

You got that right.

“It shames our community, it embarrasses us, and it makes us look stupid.”

Uh huh.  When do you all not embarrass yourselves?

“I prefer to spend my time working with authors to help promote their books and give them exposure than play character games.”

Working with authors to help promote their books?  Is that right?  Is that why you started Scandalous Scandals – so you can promote authors like this (this is how Kat started off the year):

CBDramaLlama

If you want to see exactly how Kat promotes authors and their books, just go back to this blog post and every subsequent Buzz Worthy News blog post after it, scroll down to Scandalous Scandals and read your heart out.  You’ll be amazed.

And some people still wonder why we consider Kat Kennedy to be the biggest offender of all the bullies.

So, now, you’re probably wondering, why are we showing you all this?  Well, because, after this whole bully meltdown occurred, we had to get the screenshot of the year.  The kicker!  The icing on the cake that had us rolling on the floor, barely able to breathe.  Kat Kennedy, the creator of Scandalous Scandals, the infamous queen of drama herself, says (*drumroll*):

BeyondSickOfDrama

*wipes tears from eyes*

As one of our site visitors said, you can’t make this stuff up.

Below is a post we published on August 18, 2012.  Approximately 5 weeks after we started our blog, taking screenshots of the bullies abuse of other people, posting them our blog, and stating our opinions on it, the GR bullies had a major meltdown.  Our coverage of their meltdown made Kat so mad, she tried to silence us by hypocritically reporting us for copyright infringement (we say hypocritically because if you look on her blog, it’s copyright infringement galore.)  After we removed the material from the original post () and left the excerpts from it for our analysis, she reported us again when we were perfectly within our rights under the terms of fair use.  Once again, this proves that like Looney, Kat can’t handle criticism.  She can dish it out, but she can’t take it.  This is the mark of the bullies – being able to dish abuse out in spades, but being unable to deal with criticism (and just criticism, not abuse.)  In fact, their reaction to our site was so extreme, a wave of mass hysteria swept over the bully community, causing them to turn on each other.  The GR Bully Meltdown I and II is our coverage of this event.

In part one of the GR Bully Meltdown, Peter Pan translates Archer’s Cuddleboogery blog post, , in which he addresses the widespread panic and tells everyone in the bully community basically to “keep calm and carry on.”

We guarantee the following post (and the next one) will be thoroughly entertaining.

Enjoy!

**************************************************************************************

Well STGRB readers, we hope you’ve got your popcorn ready because this is what we have been waiting for – the GR bully meltdown.  It all started with a published by Archer in which he addresses the current hysteria circling around the book community.

After he published his post, the explosions commenced.  So, we’re doing this in two parts.  The first part will be Peter Pan who picked apart Archer’s inane and self-contradictory post.  And the second, will be… well, you’ll see.  😀

So without further ado, here’s Peter:

“Blogs refusing to review indie books in the future, Cuddlebuggery included.”

Here is the irony in this statement. Irony 1: You aren’t keeping “carrying on” if you are no longer doing what you’ve done before. Irony 2: Does this include not “reviewing” indie books a la reviews that are about the author and not the book? If so, you’re doing indies a favor.

“WHAT THE FUCK IS IN THE WATER RECENTLY?”

You tell us. You put it there.

“We have readers/authors/bloggers going on crusades to ease their burning butthurt.”

Translation: We have readers/authors/bloggers setting the record straight when people tell lies. Who does that? I mean seriously. You aren’t allowed to do that. We have freedom of speech here, not you.

“We have readers/authors/bloggers running around with a mentality of “If you aren’t with me then you’re the enemy”.”

Translation: We have readers/authors/bloggers running around with the mentality of “If you tell lies, I’m going to out the truth so others can know what’s real.”

“We have authors refusing to use GR out of fear of being boycotted for one reason or another.”

Translation: We have readers/authors/bloggers refusing to use GRs because all of the fake reviews and fake ratings that make the site freaking useless. We have bullies refusing to use GR because GR might actually enforce their terms of service and they will actually have to READ the books they review and make the review about the BOOK.

“We have people crying foul of review styles that they don’t like and deem as bullying or hurtful.”

Translation: We have people crying foul of author reviews being posted in a book review section because, by definition, a book review is supposed to be about the book, and when they read book reviews that is what they want to see, not us shaming an author/reviewer/fan for a perceived wrong we’ve created by taking things people have said out of context or making things up entirely.

“No matter how you cut it… that’s a lot of crazy in the community.”

Translation: I’m going to call you all crazy, but this doesn’t apply to me, even though I’m one of the biggest ringleaders in the pack. I mean seriously. Can’t you tell I’m trying to save face and make Cuddlebuggery seem like a credible review site now that it’s no longer fashionable to attack people?

“People need to calm the fuck down. LIKE SERIOUSLY. All this bullshit needs to end.”

Translation: I’m so calm right now, I’m going to throw in a few curse words just to show you how fucking calm I am. DO I LOOK ANGRY TO YOU? Like seriously.

“People voicing their personal opinion, is being compared to bullying. I mean seriously, all of this over different opinions about fucking books.”

Translation: Remember when we told lies about authors and they defended themselves? That wasn’t voicing their opinion. That was bullying. Now this whole bullshit fucking shit of us being called bullies for voicing our opinions. Now THAT is just fucking crazy. All this over different opinions about fucking authors. Not that we were trying to fuck them. We were just giving honest opinions about their books, I mean, them as people who we have never met, based on something we’ve taken out of context and stuck in a blender.

“I think that most reviewers will realise that 99.9% per cent of the time they follow them [the goodreads guidelines] without even realising it when they write a review. And honestly, if you don’t, then maybe you shouldn’t be complaining… maybe you should be finding a new hobby… like playing games, watching movies… eating paste.”

Translation: I am going to go eat paste, because I like making fun of people who are crazy and mentally ill when I’m not cursing out teen girls. I’m going to play games and watch movies because I am condemning you for doing the very thing I do. I didn’t follow the Goodreads terms before because I didn’t have to, but I might now. I mean seriously, you know I’m lying through my teeth right now. Like seriously.

I want to take a break from dissecting this.

Like, seriously, I mean seriously, how many times can you seriously say seriously in a blog post? Oh, please, go back to judging the writing of others real quick. You are seriously better at judging writing than writing yourself. We should seriously take your serious opinions as fact as you seriously are seriously intelligent enough for us to take your word on things.

To answer my own question:

1)     I mean seriously.

2)     LIKE SERIOUSLY

3)     I mean seriously.

4)     Seriously . . . why the fuck are they even here.

5)     Seriously . . . log off and go for a walk.

6)     Seriously I can.

7)     Seriously, I don’t know these people and I don’t need anymore shit in my life.

“I do concede that that is a very subjective connotation and it is poorly worded.”

Translation: I am the master of words. Can’t you like seriously tell?

“But if you want to write a high quality review, might I suggest just one thing. Write it from your fucking heart and talk about the book. And I’m not saying this to be an asshole, or to be deliberately inflammatory I’m saying it because IT’S NOT THAT FUCKING HARD.”

I don’t need to translate this. The irony of ARCHER saying this on CUDDLEBUGGERY is irony enough.

“Just because people don’t agree with you on a matter doesn’t mean that they are the enemy. It means that they have a different life experience and are seeing things differently to you. Guess what, that makes them human just like you. It doesn’t mean that they are bullying or victimising you, IT MEANS THEY ARE SEEING THINGS DIFFERENTLY TO YOU.”

Note: By people we mean other reviewers. Obviously authors do not fall under the definition of people.

“And as for people harping on and on about people (most commonly in this community authors) being bullied via different means be it GR, reviews, comments, tweets whatever… I’m sorry I’m calling bullshit on that too.”

Thank you for not harping on and on about it, Archer.

“1 – Some people can’t comprehend that others don’t fawn over and worship the same things that they do”

Translation: 1: Some people don’t think your feelings about an author are relevant to the book.

“ 2 – Some people need to grow a much thicker skin when it comes to their works.”

Translation: 2: Some people need to shut the hell up when people are making up lies about them and attacking them personally instead of posting an actual book review.

“And this makes me headdesk. Fucking hard. Harder than John G.’s now infamous excessive headdesk meme. I could break desks the amount I do this. Why? Because it is fundamentally fucking stupid! To a level that makes me lose faith in the intelligence of the community in general.”

Thank you again for not harping on and on about it.

“If people can’t handle the fact that no book is EVER going to be universally praised then seriously… why the fuck are they even here?”

Here’s a thought. Authors exist for reasons OTHER than making you happy, Archer. Most of them aren’t pissed about your opinion on their BOOK either. Does Cuddlebuggery STILL really not get that? They pretend they do, by admitting some reviews aren’t about the book (while excluding their own reviews from that judgment!) but they clearly think the PROBLEM is about ACTUAL book reviews.

“If people can’t grasp the fact that there are things that the vast majority of people now find patently offensive then seriously… log off and go for a walk, talk to people and pull yourself together.”

Like how the majority find the things you do and say patently offensive? Why are you still typing? Go take that walk you were talking about.

“I’m not going to review Indie authors who I don’t have a pre-existing relationship with. There is just too much risk of crazy recently.”

Translation: I now interrupt this post to talk more about how people other than myself are crazy, because that is not at all offensive.

You’re trying, Cuddlebuggery, but it’s hopeless. Until you realize what you did wrong and apologize to the authors you have wronged and delete your offensive content, NO ONE is going to take you seriously. After your most recent posts on your blog, twitter, and Goodreads, you have now alienated your fellow bullies as well as all the people you have bullied. You don’t have much left unless you start taking your own advice.

“Why are people not able to let things simmer down anymore? It’s been going on for far too long.”

To this, we agree.

“Everyone needs to take a step back and remember why we all started doing this in the first place. For the sheer joy of reading.”

Had us fooled.

JBG: Great analysis!  Thank you, Peter!

Okay, well, that’s it for part one.  Stay tuned for part two when the bullies go to war – wait for it – with each other.  😀

We just received word that the attack on Sharon is still ongoing.  As usual, after the first few comments were left by people supporting Sharon, the bullies, doing what they do best, moved in and hijacked Sharon’s post.

One comment by Anon2:

It has been kicking off on Sharon Desruisseaux GR blog the last two days. STGRB gave great advice when you say don’t reply to the trolls. I tried to encourage Sharon not to reply to them, but they were coming on in droves and drawing Sharon etc. into a fight! Thankfully Sharon has now said that she is going to ignore them from now on.

These trolls spread so much poison, they will do anything to draw people into a fight. The only way to deal with them is to ignore them, it takes two people to argue. Its best to leave them to argue with themselves!

Thanks for all your wonderful advice! In the past I would have been in there fighting back, but now I see that only makes things much worse.

Two comments by Anon:

Omg! These trolls really need to get a life! They’ve swarmed in on Sharon’s blogs and are up to their usual nonsense again.

Here’s another good one by Sharon:

She’s starting to get it:
When you feed them ANYTHING-they twist it against you and their game is won by damaging a person’s reputation and deflating them. This needs to stop. It is just not right in hurting anyone to the point where they can no longer write or go on this site.

We’re not going to bother with screenshots on this one.  If you want to go to the links, waste a good few minutes of your life, and read the bullies’ verbal diarrhea for yourself, you’re welcome to.  It’s their usual MO.  Attacking and baiting Sharon and her friends, twisting their words around, dragging them down into the muck, lying, telling her that our site is evil, that we did this and that, that we’re this and that, etc. etc.  Their usual lies with nothing to back it up.  It got to the point where Sharon just pulled out of the convo altogether to go work on her book.  And we think that was a good move.

Sharon, if you’re reading our site, the best thing to do with the bullies is to completely ignore them.  Have NOTHING to do with them.  Please take a look at our Do’s and Don’t’s For Victims page.  If you want to know who they all are, read our BBG page.  All these people are trying to do is drag you down into their black hole of ugly.  They are bitter, angry people who thrive on negativity and hatred.  We recommend deleting their comments and blocking them.  Don’t know how to block?  Well, just in case you don’t, if you go to their profile page and scroll down to the bottom, you’ll see a blocking link on the left hand side.  We know by watching what the bullies have done to others that this is absolutely the best way to deal with them.  Good luck!

An addendum.  Finally, someone who’s not afraid to tell the truth on GR:

Truth1

Truth2

Well said, Gillian.  You rock!

If there are authors out there who are attacking reviewers the way the bullies attack others, we have yet to see it.  If someone wants to give us a concrete example of this, with screenshots, we’ll publish it.

New Developments

We published the post below on July 11, 2012 when our site was somehow found by Ridley and her “friends” (you’ll see how her “friends” turned on her when we post The GR Bully Meltdown 1 & 2.)  We hadn’t intended on this to happen as we were still in the middle of building it and collecting information.  We hadn’t planned to broadcast the site until August, but had to change our plans when it went viral.  Thousands of people began talking, tweeting, blogging and facebooking about it.  The bullies immediately started false rumors: that we were publishing people’s phone numbers and addresses, that we were physically stalking and threatening people, and that we were going to shut our site down.  Once they realized we had no intention of doing anything of the sort, they reported Athena’s Whois information to GoDaddy as fake information.  Athena tried to explain to GoDaddy that it was her real information, but they didn’t listen, so she changed it to her previous address and phone number.  Then, the bullies reported it again and again Athena tried to explain.  GoDaddy didn’t listen, so she just had the domain registration information privatized.  She did this not just to solve the bully problem, but also for self-protection.  And this is what really happened.  Any other “explanation” of why Athena privatized her Whois information is untrue.

The fact is that the bullies have been trying to get us shut down from the very beginning.  Why?  Because they don’t like being called out on their behavior.  They don’t like anyone hanging out their dirty laundry for everyone to see.  A perfect example of this was the time Looney wrongfully accused us of copyright infringement when we were well within our rights to fair use.  What Looney did was an abuse of the DMCA and proves that she can’t handle seeing anyone reveal the truth about her – about her lies and about her hypocrisy.  The evidence we presented apparently was too damning for her sensitive ego.

One thing you won’t ever see us do is make a claim without showing our readers what we’re talking about.  The bullies make claims all the time, but interestingly enough, they never seem to be able to prove them.  Why?  Because their claims are lies.  In the next few weeks, we are going to show you proof that these people lie ALL THE TIME.  We’ll show you concrete examples of their lies and the context in which they tell them.

But enough of this.  Here’s the post.

**************************************************************************************

We have had a busy week here at STGRB!  At the very beginning of the week, our site went viral, receiving 11,000 hits in one day.  We didn’t expect that to happen but are thrilled nonetheless.  More than anything, we are very happy about the fact that there are A LOT of people out there who are finally addressing the growing problem on GR that has largely been ignored.  This is exactly what we wanted.  We understand that there are some authors out there who react badly to reviews, but we have to ask ourselves: why?  Why is that these authors are reacting to GR reviewers the way they are?  Because they are just a bunch of crazy jerks who want to make people’s lives miserable?  Somehow, we don’t think that’s the case.  Another question to ponder is this: how is it that this bully culture has evolved and why?  If you feel that you know the answer, please, we invite you to come answer it for us.

We want to thank all of the people who have left supportive comments and messages, thanking us for our work.  You are all very welcome.  For those who have contacted us to ask for help because they are being targeted by the bullies, don’t worry, we have people working on it.

For those who left all the, uh, sweet *cough cough* comments and messages, we would like to welcome you to keep leaving them.  If you need an outlet, by all means, let it be us.  Will we listen?  No.  Will your comments get through?  No.  But you can still try.  Keep in mind that we retain all rights to your comments, messages, and electronic footprints you leave behind when you visit our site.  Just so you know.

As for the rumor about us shutting the site down, well, that’s all it is.  A rumor.  We don’t intend to shut down the site, nor do we intend to stop profiling bullies.  As long as the bullies keep doing what they’re doing, we will keep doing what we’re doing.

Now, onto other matters.  Last week, we posted articles everyday simply because the site was new and we had a ton of information to unload.  From now on, however, we will be posting weekly, unless something really big or interesting comes along that we can’t wait to share.  For today, we want to share this brief Q&A.  We’ve had a few questions come in from our Contact Us page.  Here are the answers:

Are you shutting down your site?

No, absolutely not.

Are you authors?

No.  None of us are.  Sorry, but we’re not “a group of butthurt authors seeking revenge.”

Where did you get the list of authors you support?

From .

Did you get the Peter Pan theme from the Wendy Darling/The Selection debacle?

Yes

Have you profiled Wendy?

Not yet.

That’s all for this week.  We have much more to come, so stay tuned.
