We here at STGRB are in contact with organizations that are pulling together to pursue criminal and civil charges against the organization known as Goodreads. Details cannot be disclosed at this time; however, we are looking for a current employee of Goodreads to share inside information about their organization. Any information received will be used for future lawsuits against Goodreads.

With that said, we are aware of the recent buyout from Amazon. This buyout may result in cutbacks and/or job losses – your job may be at risk. Goodreads, most likely, has already had an Amazon buyout meeting for their employees. This meeting’s primary purpose is to ensure staff members that their jobs are secure. This, however, is a smokescreen. This meeting is to keep existing staff members from seeking out new employment while they undergo reconstruction. Once the reconstruction phase is over, cutbacks, layoffs and reassignments will be issued.

Neither Amazon nor Goodreads’ upper management will inform their subordinates of future business plans until that phase of the plan has been reached. You or your position may be set for termination. Don’t let your co-worker take away this opportunity from you, so be the first to respond to our invitation.

Your privacy is guaranteed. Any and all whistleblower information received will be confidential, and we promise that NO information will be released to the public without prior consent. So how can you take us up on this offer? Easy, be the first to step forward by contacting us at stopthegrbullies (at) gmail dot com. Your identity, email, and information will remain private.

Corruption on Goodreads

In one of our previous posts, we showed you that despite what Goodreads claims about censorship on their site, they just recently censored the readers in the Mysteries and Crime Thriller group by deleting their comments and their accounts when they began a discussion about the bullying on GR and the false reviews/ratings that GR TOS allows.

Well, today we want to show you the email we received from Mercy Pilkington, the author of the Goodereader article published last week.

Mercy

So, this is proof positive that Goodreads knows about the problems on their site and is clearly trying to cover everything up.

Well, we have news for them.  And not good news, either.  Because of the bullying and false reviews on the site, not to mention the libeling, defamation, and character assassination being done on authors or anyone who stands against the GR bullies, a HUGE lawsuit against GR is brewing right now.  What is unfortunate for GR is that they think by ignoring the problem and trying to cover it up, it will go away.  But problems don’t go away just because you ignore them.  On the contrary, this whole thing is about to get worse.

Much, much worse.

You all remember Derrick from the attack on Lauren Pippa/Howard when he rated/reviewed her unreleased book, right?  If you don’t remember, we’ll show you some screenshots we took:

That’s right.  He’s the little weasel who sparked the whole blow up with Lauren Howard that ran like wildfire through the media.  Well, check out this GR Feedback Discussion called , where the OP says:

Unbelievable, right?

The bullies’ hypocrisy goes on and on and on…

This just in.  We are interrupting our regular postings because it appears that Kobo has decided to move away from Goodreads:

Maybe this was inevitable since  (see disclosure), but Kobo has stopped using the Goodreads API on its website and in its apps, Good E-Reader reports.

That means no more Goodreads ratings and reviews on Kobo book pages. It sounds as if the decision was driven by Kobo, not Goodreads or Amazon: The company’s chief content officer Michael Tamblyn tells Good E-reader that Kobo might re-add the Goodreads API in the future. And back in March when Amazon acquired Goodreads, the companies  they would leave the Goodreads API open and would not shut off the Kobo feed. (Update: Goodreads confirmed it’s made no changes to its API.)

PG covers it here.

What do we think?

Fair play to Kobo.  Kobo is MUCH better off without all the nasty, hate-filled, fake reviews and ratings from Goodreads.  However, it is unfortunate that Kobo hasn’t replaced it with a reviewing system of its own.  Maybe in the future?

**************************************************************************

8/31/2013: We have an update on Kobo.  Kobo is in the middle of an upgrade to their online storefront.  At some point in the future, the link to Goodreads reviews will return as well as Kobo’s rating system.  They are also going to include new review options including Kobo customer reviews as well as other sources of reviews.

Judyann’s Story

Today we have a guest post by Judyann McCole who was smeared by Stephanie S. and her band of merry Cuddleboogery bullies.  Below is her post, What happened to me on Goodreads: #MyAuthorNightmares.

*********************************************************************************************

I would like to start of by saying I’m kind of ashamed that it has taken me so long to talk about this. However, with the growing backlash against trolls disguised as book reviewers, I finally feel safe enough to talk about this.

A few months ago I decided to stop querying agents and go indie! For any author that’s HUGE! You hear about all this stigma against indie authors and are told how impossible it is to get readers and you just want to run to the hills fast! But I wanted my book out there. I wanted to share the characters in my mind with other people because for once in my life I had thought I found my thing!

I’m not the best in math, science, sports, or english (not my first language) however as a child/teen, I tried my best to be. Everyone else in my family was. I found myself always running to books, but never imagined I could write one due to my dyslexia. I loved telling stories, but the moment I tried to put them into words, I got scared. I remembered the kids who would laugh at me for reading (which I still do), or for just talking too long.

However somehow last summer, I was able to write not one book, but four (I still don’t know how.) I had never felt so happy in my life. I went to my teachers, friends, and a few members of my family for advice and honesty. Of course they told me they liked it. I kind of expected that.  Of the four, I thought only two of them were good enough to publish.

Adela Arthur and the Creator’s Clock was one of them. You see, I had grown up on books in which black people were never really around. (I’m really not trying to make this a race thing.) And females didn’t go on the same adventures that guys did. (My opinion? It could have just been the books I chose.) So instead of complaining about it, I wrote.

Which brought me here:

ss1

And here:

ss2

All because of this blog post.

ss3

1. Only Steph S.—the writer of the blog post had read my book.

My Crimes against the “gods and goddess” of book bloggers have to be broken up into two categories:

What they said I did and what I actually did.

What they said I did:

Steph Sinclair said she believed my book was a Harry Potter rip-off… That was alright. It was the first time anyone had told me that since I sent my book to be reviewed, but again it was her right.

Another blogger by the name of Melody had actually liked my book and started talking about it in the book blogger community, which was great until she got into some hot water with other reviewers. She had posted fake reviews (the irony) to build street credit.

So how does this effect me?

Well good ol’ Steph here claimed I was Melody. That I had step up a fake twitter account and blog and bought followers not only for Melody, but for every review of my book! I was sock-puppet she claimed.

I tricked bloggers to read my book and so the post above was my master plan!

Step by step, she lays out “proof” on how I tricked her to read my book through fake accounts.

FALSE.

After posting her review, she went all over my social media to prove what a horrible author I was. Then, she got other bloggers to join in.

ss4

What she could have done? Checked the IP address, but if she had, sadly her post wouldn’t have gone up.

Instead, I sat there and watched as someone lied about me, made fun of me, and just plain degraded me over her beef with another blogger.

  1. Any person using WordPress should know that the amount of followers you have is a mixture of twitter, Facebook, and your actual blog. It isn’t “buying” bloggers. It’s the set up of WordPress. Or at least mine is.
  2. If a lot of people were talking about my book, it was because I went to any blog that would have me and sent out book review request along with giveaways.  Not because I was making fake accounts.

None of that mattered. I was a “bad author.”

What I actually did:

I may have been over zealous in booking blog tours. I’m a first time author who had no clue what to do, but was told over and over not to expect readers to just find my book. All the advice blogs said promote! Promote! So I tried. I wasn’t aware there was a limit of book tours you could use. But that didn’t matter either because after Steph’s post, I lost almost all of them.

One of the blog tour owners, Sharon Goodwin of fictionaddictionbooktours.com, went out of her way to make sure the other bloggers knew of Steph’s post.

ss5

Funnily enough, I was the one who contacted her to let her know. I wanted to be honest with her and anyone else working with my book. I told her I didn’t know I wasn’t supposed to book so many tours. She told me it wasn’t, but the last thing she wanted was to be associated with an author like myself.

That weekend I had never cried so badly in my life. My parents were so proud of me, they kept telling me to share my book with other family members and even with my high school. But I felt ashamed and scared. This great thing I did felt like a curse. I wanted to stop writing.

I emailed Goodreads, begging for them to take my book down. But they told me no.

I deleted my Goodreads account and just tried to hide from the attacks.

ss6

ss7

Neither of them read my book.

However Steph made it her personal mission that weekend to make sure those who supported me were to afraid to review. (I understand and I wouldn’t want anyone to be attacked because of me.)

Unless she knew the blogger of course.

ss8

Someone you knew liked my book Steph? Not everyone in the world shares your opinion? No, say it ain’t so.

I forgot to mention two of my crimes.

  1. I asked Steph for a review.
  2. I spent the little money I had left to advertise on her blog and others.

A month ago, I wanted nothing more than to just die. That may seem dramatic. But when you’re afraid to open your email or get on twitter or Facebook because you’re afraid of being attacked, being alive sucks.

Steph can’t be much older then myself. I’m 20 (17 at heart) and I could never imagine doing this to another human being over a book…anything really. It just proves high school never really ends.

I was angry, hurt, and in a real dark place after this happened. Steph and her gang of trolls took away my passion for writing and my pride….for a whole month.

And that is what happened to me on Goodreads.

For those of you who say authors should have thick skin, you’re right. But that doesn’t give “readers” the write to ban together and go on a witch hunt.

Bullying is bullying.

At 20, I wrote a novel. You, Steph, you read a book and published a mean-spirited blog post.

In 10 years, I’m not going to feel like an asshole. I’m going to keep writing. Not because I’m dying to “get rich”, but because I love storytelling.

What’s next for Adela Arthur and the Creator’s Clock?

I think that series will die with one book. I wanted to delete it off the web, but fans told me “I was letting them win”, so I just made the ebook free. I don’t really have control over the book price on amazon though.

ss9

My book is #109 on the list above. I wonder if I will break top 100 after posting this.

*********************************************************************************************

Good job, Judyann!  Keep writing.  Don’t let anyone ever make you feel like you aren’t worth it.  Because you are.  And don’t let anyone ever ruin your dreams.

Just wanted to share the article GoodEReader.com did today on Goodreads bullying:

Goodereader

Thank you, GoodEReader!

For anyone who thought that the whole blow up the other day was a publicity stunt, think again.  Lauren Howard is still not going to publish her book.  Right now she is doing what she should be doing and backing away from the whole thing, ignoring her attackers, and blocking anyone who harasses her.  She wants to move on with her life.  We don’t blame her.  No one should ever be treated the way she was.

Yesterday, a large number of GR accounts got deleted and not by GR.  People willingly left.  As to the exact number of accounts, that, we don’t know.  We weren’t counting, but we do know that GR lost a sizable chunk of its active users

Right now, because of the backlash that happened in the media, the bullies are trying to turn everything around and doing to Lauren what they did to us last year when we began digging up their dirty laundry and showing it to the public.  They tried to spread rumors and discredit our site with false claims.  They are doing this to Lauren as well.  So, don’t believe the rumors being spread around.  They are false.

What is incredible is that the bullies are even calling into question Anne R. Allen’s testimony.  Anne is not a liar.  She is a good lady and a talented author who is well-respected within the book community.  Anne is telling the truth when she said she saw threats directed at Lauren.  And if you put together some of the deleted shelves (author-should-be-raped-in-prison, author-should-be-sodomized) with TinaNicole’s (aggressive-male-affection-in-prison, sodomy-by-lawn-sculpture), it’s obvious they were trying to intimidate and bully her into silence.

Whenever you see criminal behavior like this from the bullies, screengrab it immediately!  Because once caught, the bullies will do what they do best.  They will cover their tracks by removing what they did and then they will deny, deny, deny.  Not only that, they will do their best to discredit and blame the victim.  It’s disgraceful, despicable behavior!

To end this post, we want to pose a few questions to Otis and Patrick:

How long is this going to continue?  How long are you going to let these people terrorize others on your site?  What’s it going to take until you do something about it?  What?  Are you going to wait until someone actually gets raped or killed?  Because you know what?  If that happens, you won’t be able to do anything about it at that point.  Your site will get SHUT DOWN.  Get it together, guys! After all, you are in the “business of helping authors and publishers market their books to readers”. That’s how you make your money.  Remember?

“We’re in the media business today.  We’re in the business of helping authors and publishers market their books to readers.  And that’s where we make our money.  We sell book launch packages to authors and publishers and really help accelerate, build that early buzz that a book needs to succeed when it launches and accelerate that growth through ads on the site.”

– Otis Chandler, founder of Goodreads

Interesting, isn’t it?  As for our recommendation to authors and publishers regarding Goodreads, we say that until Otis and Patrick clean house, STAY FAR AWAY from GR.

***********************************************************************************************

Update 8/24/2013

Due to all the negative attention, Lauren has decided to publish under a pseudonym and change the name and title of her first book.  This still proves that the whole affair wasn’t a publicity stunt as no one will know that it is the same book once it is published.

It has come to our attention that certain people (i.e. the GR bullies who attacked Lauren) are questioning her claim that she received threats of rape, sodomy, and murder on Goodreads simply because she didn’t have screenshots to prove it.  Of course she didn’t have screenshots!  She was new to the website and didn’t know she would need to prove this to anyone or that the whole thing would blow up like it did.  She didn’t even know that reviewers were allowed to review her book pre-release!  Only those who’ve had years of experience with these people (i.e. us) know that you need to immediately screencap everything before you report them.  You need to be able to prove what they’ve done.

So, since we arrived late on the scene, we went looking for proof.  What we’ve found so far is TinaNicole’s sodomy-by-lawn-sculpture shelf (which has since been deleted by GR) and a witness to the event that we found on The Passive Voice.  It is Anne R. Allen, the writer who authored Gangs of New Media that we have featured on our sidebar.  On the Passive Voice, she says:

Witness

This comment was in response to Issendai (who is a member of the GR bullies) when she tried to call Lauren’s claims into question.  Anne stepped in to set the record straight.

We’d also like to let everyone know that PG had to shut down the discussion thread on his post early and clear out some of the nastier comments left by the trolls who swarmed in to attack his usual blog readers.  This is the third time he’s had to do that with these trolls, so he’s used to it.

PG’s good like that.  He cleans house quick :).

Welcome back for part two!

Okay, so by the time we arrived at the GR crime scene involving the attack on Lauren Howard, the smoke had already cleared and the dust, settled.  Most of the threats laid against Lauren had already been removed, but we did get a few shots of the culprits who caused the whole dust-up.

First, we will show you what’s left of the shelving of Lauren’s not-yet-released-and-now-never-to-be-released book:

Shelves1

Shelves2

Shelves3

Shelves4

Shelves5

Hilariously, just overnight, some well-meaning GR members have placed 75 five-star reviews on the book!

75FiveStars

Why is this funny?  Because the book isn’t even published!

Only on Goodreads!

We’re not saying what they did was wrong.  It wasn’t.  These GR members are making a very strong statement by placing these five-star ratings on Lauren’s book.  Many of the shelves and reviews are messages of encouragement for the author and we love the fact that people have done this!  So, thank you, everyone!

Now, getting back to the weasels who started this whole brouhaha,  and :

DerricksReview

EricsReview

If you scroll down and look at the commentary on both reviews, you’ll notice some familiar bully names.  But we’ll show you some of the screenshots we got anyway.

First, from Eric’s review:

EricReviewComment1

EricReviewComment2

And on Derrick’s review:

DerrickReviewComment1

Then, someone named Julie steps in to counter Derrick’s remarks and suddenly Shannon, the Holy Demon, rears her ugly head and the troll brigade swarms in.

Then, Lauren says:

Lauren

To which the Holy Demon replies:

HolyTerror

For the record, Lauren doesn’t have sock-puppets.  This is something the Holy Demon made up.  In fact, Lauren didn’t even know what they were.  She does now.

Now, we’re posting these particular shots because we want show you what a nasty little gremlin Shannon is and how her attitude reflects the general bully attitude that permeates the site.

But mostly we just think Lauren is right.  Her original question/concern in the feedback forum was perfectly legit and the fact that GR lets its readers rate and review books that aren’t even released yet is ASININE!

Not even Amazon lets its customers do this.  On Amazon, even if you have an ARC of a book, you cannot leave a review of that book until the book is released and published on the site.  So why does Amazon let GR’s readers do it?  There really should be some consistency there.

There are others who agree.  We know of many authors who are in the process or who have already emailed Jeff Bezos () and Nader Kabbani, VP of KDP () to let them know about the problems with the site.  These authors have told us that they have taken their books off of Amazon in order to have their copyrighted content removed from Goodreads (for more information on that, read GR & Copyright, Part 2)

Jeff and Nader need to be aware that Amazon purchased a huge can of worms when they took over GR and if Amazon doesn’t make some major changes to the site, they will continue to see authors removing their books from the Amazon online bookstore.  These two men need to know that Goodreads, as it is now, is NOT AN ASSET to Amazon.  It is a LIABILITY.  They need to understand what a hostile place GR is for authors and why authors are fleeing the site like passengers from a sinking ship.  And the more the conflict heats up, the worse it’s going to get.

What is so mind-blowing about all of this is that it is always the SAME PEOPLE on GR who are causing the problems.  And yet, GR insists on protecting these people and flat out refuses to delete their accounts.  As we said in our post, Goodreads Vs. Real Professionals, the professional blog tour companies that have come recommended to us REMOVE abusive bloggers from their recipient lists.  They get rid of them and have nothing further to do with them.  Amazon really, really needs to do the same with the trolls who infest GR and the Amazon fora.

We applaud the authors (whom we mentioned above) for taking the initiative to email Jeff and Nader.  We also encourage our readers to do the same.  SEND LETTERS TO AMAZON!  If enough people send in these messages, then maybe Amazon will listen and change the reviewing rules on GR, or at the very least allow authors to have their books removed from the site.

In any case, a stand needs to be taken against the bullying that goes on there.  And many authors are beginning to take that stand.  Case in point:

Jamie1

Jamie2

Thank you, Jamie!

We hear you.  We’ve been saying the same thing for an entire year.

So, let’s all take a stand with Jamie and email Amazon.  It’s high time they heard our voices.

********************************************************************************************

An addendum

We are VERY happy to see the support for Lauren keep pouring in.  It looks as if some big names are jumping in and showing support as well.  Not just Jamie McGuire, but E.L. James, too.  Good job, ladies!

LaurenTwitter

ELJames

This couldn’t have come at the better time… well, at least for what we want to show you.  For the author, however, there is no good time for this kind of thing to happen.  Just as our post covering the attack on L. Kirstein was done in two parts, we will be cutting this one into two as well.  The first will feature screenshots we took of the author’s story and the second will feature screenshots of what the trolls did to her.

In our last post, we discussed GR’s recent paid-for HuffPo advertisements (here and here) making a very transparent attempt to woo unknowing and unsuspecting authors to the site.  We also discussed Patrick Brown’s recent vomit-inducing message to KDP authors where he says:

KDPNewsletter

Now, in these next two posts, we will show you exactly what savvy authors know about GR and why it is the best thing for their career to STAY AWAY from it.

So… without further ado, here’s Lauren’s story in her own words (see Canceling the Release of Learning to Love):

Post1a

Post1b

As for the link in the post above that tells the story:

Post2a

Post2b

So, you all see that?  Even BEFORE the book was released, there were trolls (i.e. ) who were one-starring her book.  Then, when , they attacked her to the point where she decided to cancel the book’s release and pull out of GR altogether.

This is like the gazillionth time we’ve seen this happen.  However, this attack we noticed was particularly nasty and threats really were laid against Lauren.

Now, if you see people being threatened on GR, take screenshots and report it to the police immediately.  These trolls (and Goodreads itself) need to be held responsible for the abuse that goes on there.  Why?  Because.  As we showed you in our last post, when an author is attacked for something completely innocent, like asking a question, the author has no rights on GR other than to stay silent and let herself be at the mercy of GR management, who in most cases DO ABSOLUTELY NOTHING to help the situation.

It is TOTAL BS.

This is why we get so f#*%^&! mad when we see BS like this, followed by the lies told by Patrick and the people GR has paid to push the site as a “terrific” book promotion platform for authors.  This crap is just wrong and is precisely the kind of thing that savvy authors already know:

STAY AWAY FROM GOODREADS.

That’s all for today.  Tune in for tomorrow’s post featuring screenshots of the actual attack, or at least what’s left of it.
