Number 9 of our Carpet Bombers Series.
We were just recently tipped off by a blog reader:
To this ridiculous article in the Washington post:
Aw, what nice bullshit the WP has to say about Nenia. Good thing we have the facts, because now, we’re going to tell you the truth about this “no. 1 reviewer”.
First of all, she considers herself a “Proud Member of the Meanie Brigade”:
Second, back in the heyday of bullies, when they were allowed to roam free and wreak havoc on authors and other readers on Goodreads, Nenia was one the leaders and moderators of the Badly Behaving Authors group. This was a group of GR trolls who relished in unleashing organized attacks on authors and readers they considered to be “badly behaving”. In September of 2013, this group was hidden from public view when Goodreads announced their new anti-bullying policy which stated that GR members could no longer talk about author behavior in reviews and shelves. If they did, those reviews and shelves would be removed. In other words, author-bashing was no longer going to be tolerated on the site.
And how did Nenia react?
Well… first she flipped off Goodreads:
Then, she threatened to one-star books written by authors she assumed were behind our site (even though we have stated time and again that we ARE NOT authors) if her stgrb-supporter shelf was removed:
And guess what happened?
Yep, that’s right. Her shelf was removed:
And of course, she made good on her threat and went on a carpet-bombing spree. At the time, we managed to get a few screenshots. Notice some of the author-bashing shelves on the left-hand side:
When she threw a tantrum and protested to GR, she got thoroughly spanked:
So, despite what is said about her in the WP article, this is the real Nenia. A vicious cyber-bully who carpet bombs other authors’ books without reading them either because she doesn’t like the author or she is protesting a policy change on Goodreads. If she really does consider reviewing to be her job, then we’d have to say she isn’t doing an honest job, nor does she act much like a professional.
Nenia Campbell, no. 1 professional Goodreads reviewer?
No.
Nenia Campbell, no. 1 unprofessional Goodreads bully?
Yes.
I noticed one of Nenia’s cronies is already over there defending her. This is obviously someone who has their blinders firmly in place. I followed her for a long time until the taste of hypocrisy was too much for me to bear. She’ll read a few pages, decide she hates it, move on, over and over and over. There is NO PHYSICAL WAY she could read as much as she claims to AND write as prolifically as she does. There would have to be 48 hours in a day and 14 days in a week … or something like that. I can read fast when I am focused, and AT MY BEST I would read 3 paperbacks in a day – what is that, 21 books a week? But that’s an average – some books take a couple days. Well, you know what I mean. Anyway, her disingenuous behavior curdled in my stomach and I just quit even following her before I started to vomit.
Sooo…. group A, say 12 people, flag a shelf and GR removes it. Carpetbomber B takes a list of people, many of whom have only a passing acquaintance with STGRB, say 50 authors, and carpetbombs the books of loads of people who had nothing to do with her shelf being nuked, then she writes an article about the evils of bullying. http://neniacampbell.blogspot.com/2014/04/the-dregs-i-mean-megs-of-society-not-so.html
Confused much?
A lot goes on that I don’t condone or have any part in, yet the attitude of some of these people is that if you’re not in their gang, you must be in the other by default.
I’m responsible only for my own posts, my own actions and my own opinions. I am not in control of what other people do or say and often disagree, including with posts made on this site. Most of the time I don’t even know who the commentors are, much less agree with them.
Still I get to be a primary target, because someone who stalked me for 5 years *before* putting my name on ‘the list’ says so. How am I supposed to respect people who jump on a bandwagon like that?
I haven’t flagged anyone’s shelves, argued with a reviewer, EVER, or done any of the things I’m accused of. My argument with JJ Andrews/Issendai is between me and her and has nothing to do with reviews. I’ve shown proof of that. Anyone who has a one-star on my books for the sake of carpetbombing is unworthy of anything but derision. They haven’t done their research.
Great post! As usual, you guys are right on top of things, calling out the b.s. and showing us the truth. I’ve seen Nenia Campbell around the book community for a while, and let’s just say her bad reputation has been growing exponentially. Not a good thing to cultivate when the internet is forever.
I think it’s pretty obvious that Nenia Campbell is a bitter, failed author. Have you seen her book sales? Bwahaha! No wonder she feels the need to spew the hate.
Fascinating.
‘Reviewers’ like this piss me off for many reasons, as a consumer it skews the average making it impossible to judge the quality of a book. (Fanboy/girl reviews “OMG! I CAN’T WAIT FOR THIS BOOK TO COME OUT!” piss me off for this reason as well.)
Second, they give a bad name to people who want to write a negative review. I don’t relish in writing negative reviews – but I think they are a necessary evil – when done properly.
What I don’t get about Nenia is that she has been negatively shelved herself, by Angela. Just for thanking a reviewer for their review, which publicist companies encourage authors to do. Angela made a rule and Nenia follows or else? What’s wrong with this picture? Then she turns around and behaves this way. What can the girl be thinking?
I don’t understand people like Nenia. First of all, no one reads over 1,000 books a year. She has to be skimming them if she even bothers to open them at all. She has to stop and sleep or eat or shower at some point, right? Secondly, if she sees reviewing as her job, she sucks at her job. I take reviewing books as if I were a professional and do you know what I don’t do? Rate books poorly just because the author pissed me off. If an author pisses me off, I just don’t read their books. Simple and efficient and I make a point without getting all high school revenge scenario on the author.
Nenia just wants to see her name at the top of that leaderboard on GR. She just wants attention. It’s like Munchhausen’s except instead of faking illnesses she is faking reading books. It’s sad and I pity her and those like her.
I want to add, however, that I don’t think it is so serious that authors cannot bounce back from a few one-star reviews. Giving her even more attention (because negative attention is better than no attention) is probably not helping anything.
