Happy Anniversary, STGRB!

fireworks

Today we received a comment from anon-a-bus reminding us of something very important:

I was wondering if you guys are going to do some kind of anniversary post. I think it would be interesting, mainly because a lot of the bullies thought this blog, and what is written about and discussed on this blog, would disappear like most of the other firestorms we’ve seen on the Internet up until now. But it’s been almost one year since you started posting about the bullies like Jane Litte and Ann S. and I think people are still as passionate about the topic now as they were a year ago…if not more passionate. I also think this blog has been underestimated by those like Foz M. and others who slammed it a year ago. There’s obviously a strong need for two sides of the so-called story and this blog has provided many, many people with a place to go when it seemed like there was no hope left. I think that’s important, among many other things.

And then Goronwy’s:

I concur. You guys have had an incredible impact, and I think we should celebrate.

Anon-a-bus and Goronwy are correct.  It has been a year and as we here at STGRB celebrate the 4th of July and our independence as a nation, we are also reminded of the need to celebrate our one-year anniversary, marking one year of our readers’ independence from the oppression and abuse inflicted on them by those known as the GR bullies (also known as the Amazon fora trolls.)  What we mean by that is that for a year now, our readers have enjoyed the freedom to come to our blog, which is bully-free, and tell their story, unloading all their pain and frustration, anonymously if they choose, without the fear of retaliation or damage done to the work in which they’ve put so much of their time and energy.  STGRB is a shelter, if you will, a place where they can come take a breather and speak easy.  At this time of year, we here at STGRB are reminded of the poem on the plaque at the base of the Statue of Liberty:

Give me your tired, your poor,
Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free,
The wretched refuse of your teeming shore.
Send these, the homeless, tempest-tossed to me,
I lift my lamp beside the golden door!

And as G. Faso so cleverly put it:

GFaso

So, what’s this year been like?

Let’s recap, shall we?

We first started this blog at the very beginning of July last year after we witnessed some horrific events, mainly horrible things that happened to several authors who either had done nothing wrong, were trying to make amends, or who spoke out against author-bashing reviews on GR.  When we started writing our posts, we weren’t planning on announcing our blog or publicizing it until we had gathered enough information and at least covered the basics of what was happening.  On July 11, 2012, our blog wasn’t even finished and we hadn’t even set up our sitemap for Google yet when, only after a week of going live, somehow Ridley and co. found out, word spread like wildfire, and we suddenly had over 10,000 blog hits in one day.  Since then, we get thousands of hits every week and our list of followers keeps growing, especially after any particularly nasty bully attack.  Following that day, we were featured in the Huffington Post, USA Today, Forbes, and The Passive Voice.

And what did the bullies do?  Well, they tried to do to us what they do best: bully people into silence.  If we had a nickel for every nasty, hate-filled comment and email we received in the first six months, we would be very rich indeed.  Did it stop us?  Hell, no!  Athena just deleted the emails and our moderators deleted the comments, of course recording each name and IP address of the bullies who were stupid enough to leave their electronic footprint on our blog.  Once the bullies saw that they couldn’t bully us into silence and that they would not be tolerated on our blog (as they are not tolerated on PG’s), they resorted to dirtier, more underhanded tactics like reporting Athena to our hosting company for a fake name and address (which she proved was real and then just had the blog locked down), reporting us for alleged copyright infringement (which was protected under fair use), and they even tried to hack into our hosting account (see Bully Crime).  When all of these failed, they tried targeting specific authors they thought were involved with our site so that these authors would turn around and put pressure on us to take our blog down.

And yet… and yet… unbeknownst to the bullies, the silent stream of support kept flowing in (see Thank You Messages).  Even the authors who became major targets of abuse because of us sent us emails basically saying:

Don’t worry about it.  Keep on keepin’ on!

It was said that we wouldn’t last.  It was said that we would get sued or shut down.  It was said that we were a bunch of authors running this site who would eventually turn on each other due to the pressure.  We were berated by people like Foz M. (who eventually went silent when we showed how she and Lucy threatened an author) and Ray Garton:

RayGarton

And . (who also told lies about Eve Thomas saying that she attacks reviewers, which is nonsense.  The real story is that Eve was attacked for trying to apologize after attempting to promote her book on GR.  For more on Eve, see Apology Not Accepted):

Trout

Then, we were scolded by John Scalzi with his ridiculous post called Bad Reviews: I Can Handle Them, and So Should You.

And…  posts like this one from the bully butt-kisser herself, Stacia K., who said:

I don’t need you to avenge me, thanks.

Our response to her post?

That’s fine, Stacia, because we’re not.  You’re not one of the victims.  You’re one of the bullies.  Big revelation for you, we know.

So, you see, everyone, what these simpletons have failed to understand this entire year is that this is not an author-vs-reviewer conflict.  This is a bullies-vs-the-rest-of-us conflict.  Statements and articles like theirs are beyond moronic because not only are they hopelessly misguided, they completely miss the point and come nowhere near the heart of the matter.  And that is the abuse that went largely unnoticed for years, that has happened (and is still happening) to unsuspecting victims, author or reviewer, at the hands of the GR bullies.  Our site has nothing to with bad book reviews.  It never has and it never will.  It has to do with the bullying of other people on the internet, in particular, on the GR and Amazon fora and other places that are linked to them.

We have given countless examples of this bullying on our blog, but this excerpt from our post, More Bully Lies, will provide a good summary:

There is a HUGE difference between a bully review and a negative review (otherwise known as bad reviews, or critical or unfavorable reviews).  A negative review focuses on the book and addresses the issues the reader has with the BOOK.  A bully review usually uses profane language and always focuses on the AUTHOR.  See the difference?  Bully reviews are usually written as personal attacks on the author in order to deliberately cause damage to said author and his/her career.

Unfortunately, these bully reviewers don’t stop with just their reviews in their bullying behavior.  And when we talk about their bullying behavior, this is what we mean: cyber stalking, harassing, libeling, hacking into private accounts, personally attacking, threatening (click both here and here), leaving psychotic comments, contacting their charities, contacting their bosses, or people with which they have interviews or auditions.  The bullies have done all of these things.

In addition to this, we even recall a time when the bullies tried to libel Dougie Brimson and then Emily Giffin on their Wikipedia pages (using Wikipedia as a weapon), only to be slapped on the hands by the Wikipedia moderators (see Minerva Gets Burned.)

And yet after all of their shenanigans, after all their bullying attempts to silence us, we’re still here, aren’t we?  Why?  Because of exactly what anon-a-bus said.  People are still passionate about it.  People need a refuge to turn to when they are silenced and discarded:

GR Silences Authors, Part 1

GR Silences Authors, Part 2

Something Rotten at the Core of GR

Something Rotten at the Core of GR, Part 2

Unprofessional, Thy Name Is Goodreads

We are still here in short because people need us.  And that is why we do it.  That is why we started our blog and although our lives are filled with family, work, and social obligations, we take time out of our schedules to bring our readers news from various sources and to support those who’ve been mistreated.  We also would like to give credit to those readers who’ve been our eyes and ears in addition to our sources.  Thank you!  And thank you to our readers who have steadily been there all year, reading, listening, and offering advice.

As for the bullies, what has happened to them?

Well, we’ve seen a few snake fights, haven’t we?  As is the nature of all serpents, they inevitably turned on one another.

First, it was Kat and Archer vs. Ridley and Jane in the GR Bully Meltdown, Part 1 and Part 2.  Then, it was Jane vs. Ridley and Looney in Ridley Goes Nuts.  Then even Looney and Ridley had a falling out.

And then Angela turned against her friends/followers both here and .

Are we surprised by this?  Not really.  We were expecting it.

Now, we can’t help but notice how many of these bullies (our Biggest Offenders) have gone silent this past year:

1) Have we heard a peep from the Holy Terror after we showed how utterly nasty and vicious she is by trying to “ruin the career” of an author?  Nope.  Of course, this could be due to some of the claims that she is actually Minerva and there is some merit to that theory.  But for the most part, she’s kept the public eye turned away from her real identity (Shannon D., The Holy Terror.)

2) How about Wendy Darling after we exposed her nasty hate campaign against an author?  Nope.

3) Or Archer after we showed everyone that he cursed out a fourteen year old girl with Blythe H.?  Nope.

4) Or Lucy ever since we exposed her lie about being stalked and her vicious threat against an author?  Nope.

5) How about Kat ever since the GR Bully Meltdown and ever since we showed our readers what utter crap her reviewing “facts” are?  Nope.  Well, at least not about us anyway.  She still smears people on her blog every week (post to come).

6) Or even the big bully herself with her Dear Author blog (see Why Jane Litte Was Banned From RWABeautiful Blunder: Dear Author Strikes Again and J.S. Cooper vs. Jane Litte).  Jane obviously hasn’t stayed silent, but has made a rather transparent attempt this year to change her Internet persona into this “kinder, nicer” version in order to try to avoid negative media attention.  Has it worked?  Nope.

7) And you’ll notice, more surprising than this, even Looney has managed to shut her gaping hole.  Haven’t really heard a word out of her, have we?  Nope.

And why?

Is it because we went over into “their spaces” and bullied them into silence?  Or because we’ve retaliated by sending our people in to attack their books?  Or because we hunted down their PII and threatened to publish it (like Lucy did)?

Of course not.  We have never and would never do that.  All we’ve done is report on their behavior by taking screenshots of already publicly published material and stating our opinions on it.  (Notice the word public — key word there.)

So why have they been so quiet?

Because they know people are watching now.  They know that we’re taking screenshots and showing them to the world.  The bullies know that they are embarrassing themselves publicly.  And every time they speak out against what we do, they end up embarrassing themselves even further with the verbal diarrhea that comes out of their mouths.

I remember someone comparing them to cockroaches who have had the light shone on them and have gone scurrying frantically into hiding, back under the rocks of their  to discuss their next plan of action.  Cockroaches is an apt description.

So, that’s it in a nutshell, folks.  I know we’ve skipped a lot, but really, there is just too much to be said about these people to put into one post.

And this is why we are celebrating!  Because for the past year, we’ve put it all into one blog (that we hope to expand this year, btw, to include forums for our readers.)

STGRB is a blog for everyone who has either witnessed or been a victim of the cyber abuse and bullying by the people known as the GR bullies.

Happy Anniversary, Everyone!

Are you an author?  Are you thinking about joining Goodreads?  If so, there are few things you should know.  Joining Goodreads may actually end up harming your career rather than advancing it unless you know who to avoid.  On the site, there is a group of individuals commonly known as the GR bullies.  For names and links, see our page Badly Behaving Goodreaders and our right sidebar under Amazon Fora Trolls (you will notice that many of these people troll both the GR and Amazon fora.)  To learn more about them, we suggest reading our pages: What Is a GR Bully?, The Bully MO, and The Biggest Offenders.  These pages will tell you what they are, who they are, and how they operate.

To see firsthand what they have done in the past, check out our posts featuring the attacks on:

These are just the ones we’ve covered.  There are many, many more.

If you would like an example of the bullies’ bully reviews, click here, and if you want to see an example of the bullies cyber stalking an author, click here.  To read about Peter Pan’s experience with these people, check out his post, From Fool to Furious.  And finally, to read about them from Stitch’e POV, go to The Bully Culture.

If this wasn’t bad enough, you may want to check out the research done on Goodreads letting adults and minors engage in sexual role play together and perhaps also read up on GR’s prostitution ring.

Why are we showing you this?  Simple.  To warn new and aspiring authors of the dangers of joining Goodreads.  If you run into the wrong people (i.e. the bullies), the GR moderators will not help you.  In fact, they will side with the people who are antagonizing you.  In this post, we will give you a few examples of that, but before we do, we want to show you this comment Patrick Brown (Goodreads executive manager) wrote, talking about what he considers “freedom of speech” on Goodreads:

Patrick

You see where he tells Ridley she should feel free to say whatever she wants about an author?  The problem is that there is a difference between freedom of speech and libel carried out with the malicious intent of harming someone’s career.  Wikipedia seems to understand this and take it seriously.  Goodreads does not.  (See Minerva Gets Burned where the bullies tried to libel Dougie Brimson on his Wikipedia page and got in trouble for it.  They later tried to do the same thing to Emily Giffin.)

We began our blog in early July 2012, to report on the bullies’ behavior and warn others about them.  Our site was recognized by the Huffington PostUSA Today, Forbes, Goodereader.com and The Passive Voice.  As a result of the negative media attention, Goodreads had to take action, so they publicly announced the publication of their TOS (GR Rolls Em Out).

Edit 1/28/2014: In September of 2013 they then announced a new anti-bullying policy.  You can read the summary here on the Goodreads Wikipedia page under Criticism:

Criticism

So… did GR really clean up its act?  Nope.

We’ll give you a few instances of what GR has done in response to this criticism:

1) Simone Elkeles.  A GR member names Elle wrote a mocking review that was a parody of author Simone Elkeles.  Simone responded by requesting to both the reviewer and the GR moderators that the review be removed or changed as it was a misrepresentation of an author and violated GR reviewing guidelines.  As a result, she was bullied in the comments of the review and her books were attacked.  You can read about it in our post, The Bullying of Simone Elkeles.  We checked back on Simone a few weeks later and found that Elle’s review was still there along with all her comments and the comments of the people who bullied Simone.  What was missing was Simone herself.  Her account and her comments had been removed from GR altogether.

2) Athena just recently spoke to a best-selling independent author over the phone and what this author had to say was shocking.  A few months ago, Patrick Brown approached this author to ask her if she would endorse Goodreads.  Because this author had read our blog, she told Patrick that not only would she NOT endorse Goodreads, she would tell the media that the information found on GR about books and authors is unreliable and she would tell them why.  The following day, this author’s GR account was deleted from the site.

3) A GR member flagged a review that was a violation of GR TOS (according to Patrick Brown, “review the book, not the author”) and suddenly her account was deleted from GR:

HowFarDoesRotGo

4) Below is a message we received from an author who was attacked by the bullies for something she said on her blog.  She appealed to the GR moderators and guess how much help she received.  That’s right.  None.

I’m really upset over my Goodreads comments, rate/reviews, and shelving. They scarred my product pages forever. I’ve reported them to Goodreads two and three times now and they still won’t remove them. Even the one with curse words. They will not remove it. Their TOS specifically states you cannot use slander or harassment or anything to mentally or physically hurt Goodreads members. They STILL will not remove the posts. What the hell is wrong with them?

I’m thinking Goodreads is not a friendly place for authors. Most of my friends on Goodreads are authors. I’m not really meeting the reading/buying market there. I’ve been paying for advertising on Goodreads, and so far, it isn’t paying off at all. I’m thinking that’s a waste of time. It sucks because I feel like I’m paying to have these trolls trash mine and others’ books. It’s bad enough I’m not getting sales from the clicks, but then to think I’m actually PAYING Goodreads to let these librarians and members trash books.

Last but not least, we wanted to show you some screenshots of by a site visitor:

KdpConvo

We’ve had several site visitors speculate as to the same thing – that people within the industry are doing this to deliberately “bury the indie,” as the one commenter puts it.  Is it true?  We don’t know but it very well could be.

As for Goodreads itself, it was founded in 2006 by Otis Chandler and ever since it began, it has created an atmosphere that is hostile to authors.  An anti-author atmosphere where the bully culture was born and thrives.  The bullies we talk about on our site are the ones who are largely responsible for this author vs. reviewer mentality that permeates Goodreads and thus the book community as a whole.  As far as we’re concerned, it doesn’t have to be this way.  As far as we’re concerned, this author vs. reviewer war should not exist.  It is a fabrication created by the bullies themselves (many of whom are also authors or wannabe authors.)

As we’ve said before, we here at STGRB are not authors.  We are GR members and reviewers who are respectful of and grateful for all the hard work of those who put their hearts and souls into writing books (i.e. those authors who are not part of the bully crowd.)  We would never dream of treating them the way these bullies have for so long.

Below is the post we published on August 21, 2012, that covers Minerva’s huge fail when she tried to continue to libel an author on Wikipedia, only to receive a slap on the hand.  What we find interesting about her attitude is that she assumes that what she is doing is right and acceptable when it clearly is not.  Why does she assume this?  Because Goodreads has allowed people like her to engage in this kind of criminal behavior without rebuke or penalty.  In short, Goodreads has fostered this type of bullying and to this day, continues to do so.

****************************************************************************************************

Well, that didn’t take long!  Stop Them’s second comment has suddenly reappeared on Mistress Owlpoo’s site.  Hmm… *scratches chin*  Wonder why.

We love the fact that Miss Owlpoo is so excited to be featured on our site.  That’s like your number one fangirl squeeing because you noticed her.  How speshul!  And… and … she has dedicated another post to us!  Here are some screenshots:

1

2

Peter, can we get a translation on that?

PP: Why, sure you can!  Here you are:

Fact: I think quotation marks are called inverted commas and don’t realize how that alone shows that my comprehension levels are quite low, thus resulting in my baseless conclusions. Fact: I don’t know the difference between fact, slant, and opinion. Fact: None of what I say is important, relevant, and nothing I say proves a point in anything or changes any of the real facts: that there are reviewers posting reviews and ratings that are based on the author and not the book. Fact: I delete comments that prove otherwise because I hope the readers of my blog will be too stupid to go to the site I’m targeting and see for myself what is really going on there. Fact: Dougie Brimson noticed Amazon members using multiple social media accounts to perform malicious acts on others. Fact: Dougie Brimson launched an investigation. Fact: STGRB featured Dougie Brimson revealing one of the perpetrators in a falsehood, thus proving his assertions. Fact: Dougie Brimson was wrongly accused of making false assertions. Fact: STGRB has always published public information and has never put anyone in danger or at risk.

Alright!  Thanks, Peter!

So… Miss Owlpoo says:

So, you keep getting your little friends to delete it, STGRB.  We’ll see who Wikipedia locks out for wrongful editing.

Oh, okay!  Check it:

Wiki

Notice she edits it 8 times!  This woman does not give up!  As she edits, she says to both Goodbelle and Apollonia1992:

There is no reason for this section to be removed. It is relevant information with correct citations.

Then, Wiki’s Jethrobot jumps in and reverts her changes, saying:

Forums are not reliable sources.  Do not add defamatory content using these sources again.

Ooh, burn!  You really shouldn’t play with fire, there, Missy Minerva.

But guess what!  She doesn’t give up.  She edits it again!  And it gets reverted again!  Unbelievable!

Then she says on her blog:

3

And this is us, crowing!  Cock-a-doodle-doooo!  We warned yoooou!  Mistress Owlpoooo!  Because that’s really what “your facts” amount to.  Minerva’s facts = owlpoo.  You didn’t get anything right, except for the fact that you got dissed by Wiki and that we featured you on our site.  If you want the real facts, see Peter’s translation.

But… *scratches head*  There is something a bit odd, here, don’t you think?  Who could have such a passionate hatred for Dougie Brimson?  Gosh, that’s a tough one.  I think we can all guess who you are.

And speaking of that, Athena asked me to thank all of our awesome visitors for participating in reporting her to Amazon.  Athena has been letting us (Peter and me) do the posts because she is working with Stitch and the gang to rid Amazon of bogus accounts.  Apparently, there is more than one person using sock puppets.  Imagine that.  Surprise!  Surprise!

The efforts are working, though, because we’ve had several authors contact us to let us know that some suspicious one-star reviews have suddenly disappeared from their books.  We say suspicious because these accounts were either new or empty and/or had no review history other than those particular reviews.  So good job, everyone!

And that’s all folks!  Stay tuned for our next post, Another Dedication To Our Excellent Visitors.

****************************************************************************************************

An addendum.  Below is a screenshot from Good Belle proving that Minerva was wrong in her assumption that it was okay to libel a “living person” on Wikipedia:

Proof

Below is a post we published on August 19, 2012 about a site called Stop the STGRB Bullies owned and authored by Mistress Minerva (who some claim to either be Looney or the Holy Terror).  Minerva’s site was really the beginning (and ending) of the bullies new weapon of choice — libeling authors via Wikipedia.

************************************************************************************************

How flattered are we to learn that the bullies are obsessing over our site so much that they are actually creating whole websites for the sole purpose of fighting our efforts to expose them (from Goronwy):

Some of them have set up whole sites devoted to STGRB! Let’s start guessing who this one is (she even took the time to ‘edit’ Brimson’s wikipedia page a couple of days ago)

http://stopthestgrbbullies.wordpress.com/about/

What devotion, I tell you!  As our Good Belle says, it’s “beyond adorable”:

Oh my gawd, how cute they are over at the “stop the STGRB” blog! Such fangirls of this site! Obviously they’re so attached to this site they had to make it their whole lives! It’s beyond adorable!! :D

So, you’re probably wondering, what do we have in store for you today?  Well, one of our site visitors, Stop Them, who initially wasn’t a fan of our site, left this message for us:

Not a fan of your site but you might want to know that the Stop the Stop the GR’s bullies site is blocking posts that don’t agree with them 100%

Here is what I tried to post that they blocked. I hope you aren’t assholes like them and will post my comment even if I don’t agree with what you site is all about.

Alright, so, instead of giving you the entire comment, because it’s really long, we’re going to show you the screenshots Stop Them emailed to us.  The screenshots should say it all.  Notice the name: Miss Minerva, the Roman version of Athena – sooooooo original!  No wonder Athena was amused.

So… so… she won’t publish Stop Them’s comment because she doesn’t want to post links to our site even though her blog is – wait for it – dedicated to obsessing over our site!  Uh… okay.  Does anyone understand that because we don’t.  She also says that we take things “totally out of context” even though we publish ENTIRE conversations with screenshots nonetheless to show our readers what is really happening.

You know what I think, there, Missy Minerva?  I think your full of owlshit.  I think you are.  I think you’ve been hanging around your owl a little too much.  I think you didn’t publish Stop Them’s comment because you don’t want someone to prove that you are TOTALLY WRONG.  We have addressed the issue of improper reviews on our site.  We did it on our Bully Reviews post and on the subsequent post after it.  And we will keep doing it until GR cleans up its book pages for good.

We also have a screenshot of what you did to Dougie Brimson’s Wiki page:

Controversy

It has since been edited out by one of our site visitors, but if it pops back up again, we’ll be sure to report you to Wiki and edit it back out again.  Slander and lies are not tolerated on Wiki and if you engage in this behavior, you can lose your Wiki editing privileges.  Just so you know.

GR Rolls ‘Em Out

Below is the post we published on August 8, 2012 covering the release of the Goodreads reviewing guidelines.  What is particularly amusing about this post is that if you pay attention, you’ll notice the very beginning of the spat between Kat and Ridley that led to the first GR Bully Meltdown and each subsequent meltdown after that.

Ha!  Enjoy!  :D

****************************************************************************************************

So everyone’s probably heard the news by now.  GR just rolled out its new or newly-enforced .  Here is a small clipping of it:

ReviewerGuidelines

And boy are the bullies in a right tizzy!  For the most part, we’ve been sitting back, eating our popcorn, laughing and laughing and laughing!  But, we decided to take a break from our corn to share a few screenshots from  with you.

First, we have Patrick who introduces the new policies:

PatricksStatement

Followed by:

VagueGuidelines

Subjective

And of course Ridley has to whine about it:

RidleyWhine1

And Amber too (Remember Amber?):

AmberWhine1

Followed by Patrick’s response:

PatricksApology

And then Ridley whines some more:

RidleyWhine2AfterApology

And then Amber:

IAgreeWithRidley

We also got a couple Twitter shots as well:

BiggestFuckYou

AuthorAssKissing

So, protecting authors from their abuse is, according to Ridley, author ass-kissing and the biggest “fuck you.”  Oh, and Patrick is a douche.

*chokes on popcorn*  Ha, I love it!  :D  This is too funny!

And then:

Crowing

And this is us, crowing!  See, Ridley.  Cock-a-doodle-dooooooo!

Now, hold onto your hats STGRB readers and make sure you have that bag of popcorn ready, because this gets better.  The claws come out when Kat and Ridley go at it!  Mreeow!  Phht!  Phht!  It seems as though Kat is trying to salvage her career while Ridley, to no one’s surprise, remains her wonderful, lovely self.

KatAtRidley

RidleyAtKat

And then:

KatAtRidley2

RidleyAtKat2

And then, on Twitter:

KatBelittlingRidley

And of course we couldn’t ignore the insults thrown at us.  We’re not just the-site-that-must-not-be-named, but we’re also “that heinous site”:

HeinousSite

And:

DerangedGroup

So, because we are campaigning against the abuse of other people, we are “a deranged group.”  Hmm… *scratches head*  Oh, and we’re bozos, too:

Bozos

So to end, we’d like to say a couple things.  First, we are thrilled that our site was able to influence this positive change.  Second, the bullies appear to be laboring under a couple delusions.  One being that our site visitors/commenters are sock puppets.  They are not.  The other being that we are “butthurt authors” who are running this site.  We are not.  Any author being blamed for this site’s existence is innocent.  We’ve said it a million times, but we’ll say it again: we are not authors.

Oh.  And we haven’t been kicked off of Goodreads, either.  At least… not yet.  ;)

Below is a post we published on July 29, 2012.  It describes what we call bully entitlement, that is, what the bullies believe they are entitled to as “reviewers”.  And trust us, we use that term very loosely when we refer to the bullies, who we consider not to be BOOK reviewers at all, but author reviewers from hell.

As you read, you will also see why we chose to name our site The Blog That Shall Not Be Named :).

***********************************************************************************************

I have to say that I am extremely impressed with the intelligence of the commenters who visit our site.  Not only do they provide keen insight into the recent events going down on GR, they give us ideas for new posts.  This one is about bully entitlement.

But before I go further, I want to share this information we received from a site visitor who commented on our post, Jane Litte of Dear Author.  The visitor asked us if we remembered romfail.  We asked what that was and the commenter said:

Old news. This was a couple years ago, but this got her kicked out of RWA. Jane would tweet every Friday night, Romfail. She would pick books she considered “fails” (romfail). She would choose a book every Friday and take out snippets and make fun of it. The usual crowd would cackle along with her and even a few authors joined in. The thing is, she never seemed to see this as mean-spirited. It was terribly hurtful for some of the authors of the book on the chopping block. There is quite a bit of info on this if you Google it. She’s a piece of work. Very cold.

So, she got kicked out of Romance Writers of America, huh?  Wow, that explains A LOT!  Thank you, Anon Too, for the information!  And please, STGRB readers, feel free to share any and all information you have with us.  The more we have, the more we can write about!

Now, moving on … this post, Bully Entitlement, originates from the comments we received on Ridley Gets Schooled, where .  We received several links to book blogger sites that have responded poorly to GR’s new reviewer guidelines that Patrick Brown talks about here.  They seem to think they are entitled to say whatever they want about authors or even about publishing companies in their reviews.  To all authors, publishing companies, and publicists who are looking for book bloggers, we’d like to say:

Be careful who you give your ARCs to.

The majority of those in the book blogging community and in the Goodreads community are wonderful, professional people who will give you honest reviews.  Unfortunately, there are a few bad apples that believe they are entitled to say whatever they like about an author or even about a publishing company in their book reviews.  Tearing down a book they don’t like is one thing, but tearing down the author or the publishing company is another.  It is not appropriate for a book review and apparently Goodreads agrees with us on that.  So, we have decided to create a list called “Blogs To Avoid” in the righthand sidebar of our site.  Feel free to peruse it or even add to it if you like by sending us a message.

The first blog we heard about was from a visitor who left this comment:

Readers behaving badly are upset that a review about a book should be–wait for it–about the book. Already they’re whining that limits will be put on their ‘right’ to attack and harass authors.

Buried by Books

The comments on this blog post are revealing.

Here are a few screenshots of the post itself:

I love how she says that having to review the book and not the author “gets her goat.”  *snort*  That must be one sick and twisted goat!

Now, if you read down the comments , you will see that our visitor was right.  The comments are VERY revealing

Infuriating

You mean, a book review has to be about the … the … the book?!  Well, I never!  How dare they!  That’s just … that’s just … infuriating!

And of course it’s our fault:

OurFault

The bullies claim that they’re not reading our site, that they’re boycotting it.  Yeah right!  Bull Shiitake Mushrooms:

SiteMustNotBeNamed

So now, we are the site “that shall not be named.”  How flattering!  They’re comparing us to Voldemort!  Muahahahaha!  *wrings hands*

Here’s more.  They are upset now that GR is finally policing their site and so they are heading out:

Ann Somerville says much the same thing:

BadlyDone

Let’s stop here for a second and think about this.  The bullies’ reviews are not getting deleted, just hidden, so why are they so upset?  One of our site visitors asks this same question in his analysis of GR’s response to our site (comment on Ridley Gets Schooled):

Two-year-old Ridley looks a lot older in her pics.

I like Patrick the Community Manager’s compromise. Allowing trash talk about authors but limiting its visibility to friends and followers fixes a lot of problems on GR’s end:

1. Only a few dozen to possibly a few thousand people can now view the potentially career destroying lies and abuse that these people spew.

2. YOU guys can’t view the lies and abuse that these people spew, which lessens your ammo against GR.

3. Authors and agents can’t view the lies and abuse that these people spew, which stops them from commenting and handing these liars and abusers more ammo.

4. Casual GR members who are now aware of the problem on GR because of sites like STGRB can be assured that something is being done about the lies and abuse that some members continually spew.

5. Users no longer have to sift through petty, irrelevant shit to find reviews about books.

6. The people who WANT to read petty, irrelevant shit can still do that, by being friends with people who write petty, irrelevant shit.

I really don’t see why anyone would have a problem with this new idea. But, then, I’m not two.

This visitor doesn’t understand why the bullies would have a problem with this, but we do.  Now, remember good ol’ Lucy and her review that got buried?  She was upset for the same reason these bullies are.  Because once you hide their reviews, you take away their power – their power to torment, their power to tear someone down if they get in their way, and the power to destroy their career.  It has nothing to do with “writing honest reviews” and sharing them with their friends as they claim.  This whole thing is about having power over others.

In Lucy’s post, Athena said:

So, are you starting to see this unhealthy obsession with being above everyone else?  One commenter on our blog said that the bullies’ behaviour stems from the need to feel important and gain power over others.

And remember what Stitch said in his Bully Culture post:

Another aspect of the GR bully culture that I have noticed is that reviewers exercise self-promotion and in doing so, snark has become a status game where reviewers attempt to score points.  Whoever can write the nastiest, most disrespectful review becomes the winner.  Whoever can get the most ‘likes’ and ‘comments’ on their reviews is the winner.  It becomes a status game of getting to the top and staying at the top.  It doesn’t seem to work with 5-star reviews.  It only works with the scathing one-stars.

If you hide their reviews, they can’t play this status game (i.e. power game) anymore.  The game disappears entirely and their whole culture goes along with it.  Under these new GR guidelines, their bully culture cannot exist.  So what do they do?  They throw a temper tantrum, pack their bags, and head out to another venue that will allow them to stalk, harass, humiliate, and otherwise abuse other people at their pleasure.  Sick, isn’t it?

And if you don’t believe this, you might want to read this last screenshot, because it really says it all:

StopsTheBullying

So to recap: the bullies get spanked, they throw a temper tantrum, pack their bags, and leave.

Our advice to Goodreads: LET THEM GO.  You don’t want these people littering your site.  They make you look BAD.

The following is a post that we published on July 26, 2012, of Ridley whining about her review getting hidden.  In her original GR post, she even admits to considering authors to be “fair game”.  The post ends with some real examples of bullying.  Unfortunately for Ridley or anyone else who considers authors fair game, this is no longer allowed on GR (according to their rules) and is not allowed online in general according to the police who busted Amanda Welling for death threats against an author.

So, next time you think someone is “fair game”, bullies, think again.

As for our readers, enjoy the post!

**************************************************************************************************

Remember Ridley?  Well, Stitch just informed us of something he found on Goodreads Follies.  We don’t agree with everything GF says but we do like their commentary on the bullies and this one we just couldn’t pass up:

We went in search of other snark-worthy events on GR tonight and found this juicy tidbit. GR reviewer  apparently posted of “The Vampire of Vigil’s Sorrow” by , only to find out shortly thereafter that . (Note that if you are on Ridley’s friends list you might be able to see the original review . Our link above is to someone else’s quote of it.)

When we read this, we headed over to this link and took a few screenshots to show you.  is Ridley’s original question:

Why

Followed by Patrick Brown’s response (notice he says her review was hidden because it is “not a review of the book, but rather of the author”):

ReviewOfAuthor

So she says:

Whine1

And:

Whine2

And:

Whine4

And this one stunned us.  She says here that she thinks authors should be “fair game”:

Whine3FairGame

So, it seems as thought Patrick Brown does understand that author reviews are not book reviews.  This is a step in the right direction.  So, then, tell us Mr. Brown, have you hid these reviews yet?  Because we flagged them!

We find it strange that we bought these bully reviews to light – the ones Patrick Brown is referring to – and yet we end up being the bad guys for showing it to the public.  How does that work exactly?  Please, tell us, because we really want to know.  Because we think it’s a bunch of bullshit!

We are the ones who originally brought everyone’s attention to reviews that are not book reviews but actually defamatory author reviews and somehow we get vilified.  And somehow, according to the reputation-ruiners out there, we are not actually who we say we are but instead are secretly authors who are disgruntled about bad reviews, so we started a website to retaliate against those who wronged us.

What a load of horse manure!  We are bloggers and readers who are FED UP with the behavior of these people and want it to STOP!  We brought everyone’s attention to this problem because something needed to be done!

What blows our minds is that some people say that what the bullies do isn’t bullying, even when we have provided examples of it and screenshots to prove it.  Like this:

ArchersResponse

An 8th grade teacher and a 20-something grown man saying this to a 14-year-old girl is bullying!  We consider that to be bullying!

And this too:

RuiningCareer

This is the example we gave of The Holy Terror and Ridley destroying an author’s career for their own personal fun because Ridley thinks that they should be “fair game.”  Authors depend on their income to survive and feed their families and these people try to destroy that either for fun or for vengeance.  We even had an anonymous author tell us that she couldn’t sleep at night and had nightmares because of what these people did to her.  We definitely think this constitutes bullying.

If there is anyone out there who thinks these examples are just people having a good time and that it is simple mockery, snark, and lighthearted fun, then you seriously need to get your priorities straight.  Shame on you for saying that this in not bullying!  SHAME ON YOU!  This is not lighthearted fun!  This is sick, twisted, disgusting behavior!  And it needs to be stopped!
