Category: Bully Attacks

You all remember the post where one of the Amazon/GR bullies tormented someone with special needs.  Well, here is another example of an attack on such a person.  This article comes from an anonymous blog reader who wanted to share their opinion on GR troll attacks.

******************************************************************************************

Reviews that have merit and are written with some substance and thought, regardless of whether they’re negative or positive, on the book itself. Anytime, a review brings things in that are hearsay , or are gossip, by nature about the writer, that is not pertinent to the review itself; you no longer have a book review.

Emilie Autumn, an independent author, musician, and poet, recently was the victim of a mob of trolls on Goodreads, who left nearly two pages worth of reviews about her work, which were all one-star reviews. Some were not as egregious, but were still clearly part of some act of retaliation. The sheer number in such short time can only mean that there was a troll mob attack.

Emilie Autumn’s book “Asylum for Wayward Victorian Girls,” is a book that is partly about her experience in a mental hospital, but it is really about her bipolar disorder, which defines a lot of her work.

I have paid witness to many trolls over the years on Goodreads, leaving many vulgar, abusive reviews, but these reviews really seemed more egregious, in their tone and vulgarity, about Emilie’s work, in specific. They are demoralizing in tone, when speaking about those with either mental illness or some traumatic incident of abuse in their past. Therefore, I caution anyone reading this to please exercise caution, when reading either of the below reviews.

For example, this one reviewer left a review of her work, containing very disconcerting, false accusations that Emilie Autumn faked her mental illness, and by extension, any fans of her work are thus similarly faking their mental illness:

JosiesReview

Another review, right around the same time, much like the one, implies that anyone with a past of self-mutilation, suicide attempts, must show proof for it to be legitimate. It also further implies how you act in response to the deep, paralyzing experience of sexual abuse, somehow evaluates whether that trauma was genuine or not:

JasonsReview

This was really a last straw moment for me, with respects to Goodreads. To say this issue is about censoring criticism is beside the point, the above reviews are not even critical analysis of the content itself. They are more like veiled attempts to discredit an important advocate on the issue of mental illness, and to further bully those who are fans of her work. That is hardly a review, it is really harassment

Goodreads should be about reading and evaluating what we’re reading in a civil, ethically democratic way, and not about bullying, nor about spreading gossip. We venture to reviews to read responses on content. The above type of reviews become indiscernible, by the fact that they contain so much hearsay, and false allegations.

Most important, Emilie Autumn’s work was an artistic act of really legitimizing what happened to her in her past, when she herself, as a sufferer from bipolar disorder, struggles with really feeling mentally grounded to this reality. When people spread the dangerous idea that those that suffer from mental illness lack credibility, they are basically dehumanizing these people, shutting out their freedom to express themselves artistically and creatively.

When it comes to a story like Fifty Shades of Grey, it’s not unexpected that there will be a tremendous dividing line in terms of those who enjoy it and those who don’t. Regardless of how one may feel about the tale, the author, EL James, is a woman deserving of the same respect as any other person.

Recently, EL James hosted a twitter chat, #AskELJames, and guess who was leading the wolf pack that attacked her?

That’s right, folks!  None other than Jenny Trout, the notorious bully who sabotaged an author’s book by telling her friends and fans to pirate it and get it taken down from online bookstores because she claimed it was racist and violent toward women of color, only to realize later on that the author was a woman of color herself.

Yeah, remember that?  Well, now she and the known misogynist tabloid website The Mary Sue, have begun a harassment campaign on twitter to attack James.

MaySue

jenny

Navigating to the Tweets in question reveals mostly personal attacks, body shaming, referring to the author as a “cunt,” etc.

Jay

Waiful

Regardless of how you may feel about the books, the author is still a human being, and everyone has the option not to read them. Ultimately, if one fact should be noted above all others, it’s this: E.L. James is one of the few women to strike it rich off her writing and build her own empire in a male-dominated economy, and she is being singled out for ridicule. It’s appalling that whenever a woman rises up in this world, and people like Jenny Trout or the Mary Sue do their best to take them back down.

By promoting this harassment against her, the Mary Sue and Jenny Trout are explicitly endorsing the degradation of her as both a human being and a woman.

Edit: We just received from a blog reader.  Apparently, there are many people out there in cyberspace who agree with us:

Well said, David!

Just when we thought Jenny had turned over a new leaf.  Sigh.  Alas, she has not.  She’s on another rampage.  We feel as though we really don’t have to sum up what Jenny’s done this time.  The title of our post says it all.

We found out about this from a link to an FB article sent to us from a blog reader:

FBPost4

Stunned, we went to Jenny’s blog to find out for ourselves.  We won’t link to it here, but we will show you the shots we took.

It starts with:

And ends with:

We would say we’re shocked, but everything coming from the bullies these days seems to get worse and worse. When the author on FB brought it to people’s attention, do you think Jenny was ashamed of her behavior and apologized for it?

Uh… no.

She sent this to the FB author:

JennyAdmits

Way to go, Jenny!  You’ve shown your true colors once again!

An Addendum

The author (who we know is definitely NOT racist or a rapist) who originally called Jenny out for her bullying was recently attacked on Twitter by her and her fans/friends.  We wanted to show you what these bullies do when you stand up against them (we’ve whited out the author’s identifying information to protect him):

Feminist_bullies

On July 24, 2014, Kathleen Hale approached STGRB with interview questions pertaining to online bullying and our site.  Below is the Q&A that resulted from that interview.

What reasons did you have for building this site?

We started our site two years ago when we noticed a certain gang of Goodreads friends (later termed the GR bullies) who formed organized attacks on authors on Goodreads.  These were usually authors who had unknowingly broken some kind of “rule” (rules made up purely by the Goodreads bullies) and were labeled BBA.  It would usually begin with the author getting verbally attacked by the gang who would swarm in and back the author into a corner.  Then, this gang would attack the author’s books on both Goodreads and Amazon, leaving either nasty one-star reviews or derogatory shelving or both.  They would also hunt the author down on other platforms like the author’s personal website or Facebook page.  Afterwards, the attackers would blog about the author and begin what we call the “career destroying” phase, making it known that this was an author whom they did not support and would encourage anyone they knew to boycott their books.  What we also found was that most of the bullies were fairly ordinary people who were following the lead of a few unbalanced individuals, not realizing that they don’t really know these online ‘friends’ well, but the activity has attracted a small number of obsessive stalkers who seek out new victims regularly in a demonstratively pathological need to harm others.  These few individuals will actually bait authors online to get them to say something, anything, that can be taken out of context so that they can instigate the larger group to swoop in for mass attacks.  Because this online gang warfare largely went unnoticed and unchecked, especially by the Goodreads management, we began our blog to monitor and document what was happening in order to educate the public and warn others.

Do you still get complaints from people about Goodreads? If so, how many per month, and what is the nature of the complaints?

Yes, we do.  We used to get dozens per month when we started our blog.  Now we get maybe one or two per month.

Do you recognize the name Blythe Harris?

Yes, we sure do.  Blythe Harris was involved in an attack on a fourteen year old girl back in May of 2012.  Blythe, who is an eighth grade teacher, and another GR bully named Archer Adam Pring, ganged up on this girl when the girl commented on Blythe’s review of a book.  Both GR bullies proceeded to curse the girl out, telling her to f*** off multiple times.  You can read about it here:
https://stopthegrbullies.com/2013/01/30/bully-reviews/

In what ways has Goodreads become a platform for bullying?

In conjunction with the Amazon fora, Goodreads IS the platform that started the online phenomenon known as review bullying.  Goodreads management practiced an extreme laissez-faire policy when it came to their members.  They allowed them to harass and bully authors with very little or no penalty.  As a result, vicious gangs formed and authors could get bullied right off of GR for doing very little to nothing, even for just being friends with the wrong person.  In 2012, the situation was so bad, we decided to start our blog to help stop the abuse.  In two years, it has gotten better, but we are still fighting this problem of online abuse towards authors.  These gangs still exist and they have spread to other platforms like BookLikes and KBoards.  The best thing we can do now is just educate and warn others about the dangers that exist for all authors out there in the cyber world.

When you say “dangers that exist for all authors out there in the cyber world,” what do you mean exactly? What have you seen happen to bullied authors? And In what ways is this particular kind of bullying particularly nasty? Do you think it would be enough to drive a person crazy?

We’ve seen authors get death and rape threats.  That was on Goodreads.  Many are hounded relentlessly online, stalked both online and physically, and have had their private information published that led to them being called in their home and threatened.  We have many of these incidents documented on our blog.  It’s not uncommon for some authors to become severely depressed from being harassed or even have thoughts of suicide.  So, yes, it can really drive a person crazy, especially sensitive people like authors.

Before we show you what happened over the weekend, we want to let our readers know that the message we want to convey with this story is:

DO NOT BLOG ON GOODREADS!

If you’re a Goodreads author, DO NOT create a blog on Goodreads or create a blog feed from your own personal website into your Goodreads author profile.

Why?

Just recently, another Goodreads author became disgusted with some of the hateful reviews that litter the website so thoroughly.  In fact, she became so disgusted, she left her thoughts on some of them, thinking she had every right to speak her mind.

Sigh.

If only she had come to us first.

So… what happened?

Can you guess?

Yes, of course, she was attacked and then her books were attacked with derogatory shelving and carpet bombs:

DerogatoryShelvesAndCarpetBombs1

DerogatoryShelvesAndCarpetBombs2

DerogatoryShelvesAndCarpetBombs3

DerogatoryShelvesAndCarpetBombs4

We’ve also discovered the trolls’ new way of getting around GR’s new anti-bullying policy that forbids author bashing: the dreaded “see-private-notes” shelf:

SeePrivateNotes

So… what did this author do?

She decided to write a Goodreads blog post about her experience:

Post

And of course, as you all would expect, the trolls swarmed in on this, too, puffed up with their condescending, sanctimonious hypocrisy, preaching, “Do as we say, not as we do.”

1

Yes, please, by all means, if any of you use Khanh’s name, please don’t get it confused with Khan Noonien Singh, the iconic Star Trek character played so brilliantly by Ricardo Montalban and Benedict Cumberbatch.  Getting her name confused like this is not only an insult to the character, but also to the very fine actors who portray him.

To add insult to injury, not only did the bullies attack her here, too, they reported the post and got it removed.  Now if you , you get this:

Now, do you see why we say very loudly and clearly, DO NOT BLOG ON GOODREADS?

This is why.

On STGRB we don’t consider mean-spirited reviews to technically be bully reviews (although we’ve seen some that skirt the edge rather closely).  Our definition of a bully review is one that personally attacks the author and/or is created specifically as a revenge review to hurt the author’s sales.  BUT!  We do believe that authors have the right to state their opinions and critique reviews.  We believe that anything that is published is open for public critique, be it a book, an article, a blog post, a review, etc.  We don’t believe that anyone should be silenced, attacked, or harassed for stating their opinion and we’ve seen several other authors who were attacked for doing just this.  Nathan Bransford for one, who was attacked on his OWN BLOG (and then later attacked on Twitter by Jane Litte) for saying much the same thing that this author did, only he was criticizing reviews left by Stephanie Sinclair and her friends, not Khanh.

Oh, btw, if trolls come to your blog or FB page or other social media to harass you, don’t engage them.  Just record, report, delete, and block.  It’s the best way to deal with them.

Anyhow, this is why we recommend that authors steer clear of blogging on Goodreads.  You are not allowed to speak your mind there and if you do, you will be subject to this kind of harassment as well as the fake one-star ratings, derogatory shelving, and harassment on your other social media.  You will also have your posts removed by GR staff and in cases of repeat “offense” (“offense” meaning the crime of speaking your mind), they will ban you from the website.  On GR, authors are still not allowed to have a voice about these things.  We think GR has come a long way in the fight against bullying and we’ve agreed with several of their recent policies, but this most definitely isn’t one of them.  Goodreads is still silencing authors and that needs to change.

Just this last week, we’ve seen a gang attack on an author the likes of which we hadn’t seen in a while. The victim was author Mandy Baldwin.

It seems the trouble started with this complaint (now deleted) which Mandy made on March 20 2014 on the KDP forums.

A word of warning: KDP (Kindle Direct Publishing) forums are forums provided by Amazon for authors who publish on Kindle. Many authors think they are private. They are not. Like all other public discussion forums (Goodreads groups and threads, Amazon forums) they are NOT a safe places for authors to vent. It is a sad fact of life that nowadays all public discussion groups are monitored by trolls looking for authors to attack. When you join these groups, assume you are talking to a hostile audience, and adjust your behavior accordingly.

Back to Mandy Baldwin’s story. Her KDP complaint first attracted the attention of the trolls, but she made the mistake of repeating it on Goodreads about a month later

Baldwin deleted her posts, but thanks to the ever-vigilant trolls (in this case Spare Ammo, AKA Mahala on Amazon and Goodreads) we have the screenshot of her original post. All screenshots .

Complaining on Goodreads triggered a .  You can spot many of the usual signs of a Linda Hilton troll review:

#1 Grumble that formatting, even though correct, somehow impedes the reading experience:

“Block paragraphs made the reading experience choppy, without an easy flow. Formatting matters.”

In a later blog post, Hilton goes on and on, as is her wont, about why she doesn’t like block paragraphs.

“Block paragraphs work well for non-fiction if the author is presenting distinct information and wants the reader to take a tiny pause to think about what she’s just read. But fiction, when the author should want the reader to get into and stay in the story, any pause is just an opportunity for the reader to remember she has something else to do. While you as the writer may allow her a convenient bathroom break between chapters, you don’t want to be giving her those breaks every single paragraph.”

#2 Complain about the POV. Better yet, say while “there is nothing inherently wrong” with the POV chosen, while insinuating that there is, in fact, a lot wrong with it.

“Although there’s been a passage of time from the end of chapter one to the start of chapter two, the amount of time passed isn’t defined, leaving me as a reader bla bla bla bla bla bla bla bla”

At this point, Mahala got into the game with a blog post of her own where she claims to have discovered that some of Mandy’s reviewers, Naomi and Becky, were not quite on the up and up. When a commenter on STGRB pointed out that she is hardly the one to talk given that she has championed sock-puppeteer author Gavin HetheringtonMahala gets mad.

Given the treatment she’s meted out to authors who’ve displeased her (names omitted for their protection) you don’t want to get Mahala mad!

But by this time, Mandy’s days were numbered. Look at the ratings and shelvings of her books. You’ll see some very familiar names.

For easy reference, compare them to the names in the ‘Badly Behaving Goodreaders’ section. If they’re not all there, they should be.

So what have we learned from this? The same old lesson: NEVER complain about reviews on a public forum, at least not under your author name. It’s an invitation for the trolls to attack you. Mandy made the mistake of trying to argue her point. Her books were trashed as punishment.

Edit: The IP address of the sender was traced and we now know he/she lives in Newbury, UK.  We understand that action is being taken against the culprit behind these emails.

************************************

We received screenshots of two emails sent to one of our blog readers attacking fantasy author Melissa Douthit.  We were also given permission to share them with our readers and alert people to be on the lookout for libelous emails like these that attack and libel any author or reader.

Email1a

Email1b

Email2

We have said in the past and we’ll say again — none of us here, neither Athena, Peter, Stitch, Tink, nor me, are authors.  We also state this in our sidebar and Who We Are page.

The review MLW is accusing Melissa of writing is this one:

Review

We want to let our readers know that everything said in these emails is FALSE information and reminds us forcefully of an attack on another Melissa, Melissa Foster, who was targeted by a failed author banned from Goodreads.  So was Hugh Howey.  Both Melissas and Hugh are innocent of the accusations made against them and we find the harassment and libeling of these authors disgusting and despicable.

Melissa Douthit has been accused of many things of which she is completely innocent.  She has been accused of creating sock accounts in order to one-star other authors’ books and five-star her own.  She has been accused of stalking, harassing, and attacking reviewers.  And she’s been accused of being the founder of our blog and of the Facebook group WIN.

We know our readers already know this, but none of this is true.  Melissa became a target of bully abuse two years ago when she .  She left Goodreads in February of 2012 and stated clearly that she would never return.  Just recently, she has published an article .  She’s endured being harassed, stalked, carpet-bombed, and threatened.

We ask our readers to alert us if they see any of these libelous emails circulating around the internet.  If you happen to receive one, please report it and inform the victimized party immediately.

Thank you!

Last week, Anne Rice did something awesome!  She did what authors, readers, bloggers, etc. should all be doing.  She banned the bullies from her FB page and deleted their comments.  Why?  Because they did what they do best — tried to bully her into removing and using our Nenia Campbell blog as an example:

AnnesPost

Once the bullies caught wind of her post, they descended upon her like a pack of wolves in sheep’s clothing pretending to be innocent and/or disinterested third parties.  As expected, they started in with their propaganda and lies, attempting to discourage her from speaking out and from using our post to do it.  They also began leaving Anne links to all their blog posts written two years ago, condemning us for publishing public information on our website.

The list of bullies banned from Anne’s page include: Autumn Turner, Jenny Trout, Cyndy Aleo, Kara Malinczak, Elyse Schramm, Flora Bellini, KarlynP and Amanda Welling.  They were banned for being disruptive and disingenuous as well as telling lies.  We know you’ve all seen their nonsense before, but we’ll still give you a few examples of what we mean.  Just for kicks.

You all remember Autumn Turner, right?  Well, check out what she had to say to Anne regarding her post.  Notice the implied threat at the beginning, “I won’t support your books if you support them”:

AutumnRealID

AutumnRealID1

Then, Athena jumped in to set the record straight and let Anne know about Autumn’s many internet identities and why she was labeled a bully on our blog:

AutumnRealID2

And those identities are:

Misanthrope on Google Blogger

Dragon Wolf on Pinterest

Athena is right.  Autumn was also lying about our hosting company.  We left because we found their rules to be a little too strict.  And, we left on good terms:

Cancellation

Now, how did Anne respond to Autumn’s lies?  Well…

AnneToAutumn

AnneToAutumn2

See how Autumn calls us morons?  Nice, huh?  That’s right, Autumn, whenever you lose an argument, you should always resort to ad hominem attacks.  It works so well.  It doesn’t make you look childish at all.

So, after this, guess what happened!

*drumroll*

That’s right!

Autumn got banned!

😀

Our second example was posted by Nettie Neal Bell who tried to defend Edward Lorn by saying that we wrongly labeled him a bully.  You all remember Troll Edward from Once Upon A Time in the Land of BookLikes, right?  Well, fortunately Athena stepped in to disabuse everyone of Nettie’s silly notion:

EdwardLorn

EdwardLorn2

Finally, our last example is Jenny Trout and the load of lies she tried to feed Anne about how we put people in danger and published their private information, and how we don’t care about authors, how we shot babies and beat up the elderly, and yada yada yada, whatever lie she and her friends could think of to vilify us.  Oh and btw, the “well respected website” she refers to here is Jane Litte’s Dear Author.  *snort*  Guess she forgot to mention Jane’s attack on Nathan Bransford after he spoke out against the bullying on Goodreads (Nathan, too, had mentioned our blog and was attacked for it).  She also forgot to mention how Jane defended the violent reviewers who physically threatened Veronica Roth.

JennyLies

Oh, btw, we’ve never used content from Dear Author, so that’s another lie.  In fact, that’s a new one.  Haven’t seen that one before.

Anyway, this is what Anne had to say to Jenny:

AnneToJenny

And then guess what happened!

*drumroll*

That’s right!

Jenny got banned!

😀

So, in the end, how did Anne respond to all of this nonsense?  Well…

AnneOnSTGRB

AnneOnBullies

We should also mention that the majority of the comments on Anne’s post were overwhelmingly positive toward her message about the bullies and about STGRB, including this one:

GreatSite

Guess what, bullies!  Anne and her followers aren’t stupid.  They can see right through your bullshit and they know what you’re up to.  Unfortunately for you, your tactics are transparent and haven’t fooled anyone.

Now, how did the bullies react to getting banned?  Well… here was Jenny’s very mature reaction:

JennyTrout

The “Smart Bitches” whose self-description is only half right (and we’re not referring to the “smart” half), had this to say:

SBSarah

Uh… no, Sarah the Smart Bitch.  She doesn’t have a narrow view of book reviewing.  She just has an honest and honorable view of it, unlike you and the cretins you hang out with online.  She also knew Jenny’s “information” was a load of horse manure.

Now… Sarah the Smart Bitch, if you’re going to write a blog post, you should really publish the facts.  The facts are that we published public information on our blog.  We never published private information or addresses or phone numbers or anything of that nature, unlike some of your bully friends who’ve done that to several authors we know and who have also physically called and threatened them.  The fact is that we only published real names if they had previously been made public and publishing someone’s real name is not PII, nor is it illegal.  Publishing their real name in conjunction with their address, phone number, IP address, etc. is PII.  Yet you bullies seem to be missing this fact.  You seem to be having a problem getting your facts straight in general, don’t you?  And here we thought you were “smart bitches”.  Hmm…

Apparently not.

Furthermore, Sarah the Smart Bitch, we here at STGRB have a feeling that Anne doesn’t give a flying #$%! about what you or Jenny Trout or any of your bully friends have to say about her.  Anne Rice is a superstar.  And you?  Well… you’re not.  Anne has millions of readers and millions of followers who understand perfectly well the message she is trying to convey.  Why?  Because they’ve seen your lies and your drama and your bullying and they’ve had enough.  We’ve all had quite enough.

Anne is absolutely right.  You need to get out of the business of bullying and leave authors and other readers alone!

****************************************************************************

P.S. Hey, bullies!  Since you seem to like this cartoon so much, we’ll show it to you again as a reminder of what will keep happening to you when you act like jerks online:

ToTheDoor

Today we are sharing with you a very sad story.  Unfortunately, it’s a story we’ve seen before and it is something that happens when bullies take their bullying too far.  It’s about a boy in Ireland who committed suicide after being bombarded with abusive messages from online cyber-bullies.  After his death, his mother urged these sites to provide the police with the identities of the abusers so they could be held accountable for their actions.

Because we’ve seen this before, we urge all parents who have teenagers to keep watch over what is happening in their social media accounts.  Please don’t let your child become a victim of online abuse.

In our last post, A Story of Real Author Bullying, we showed you a case of genuine bullying as opposed to the case of Sarah Daltry who cried bully.  In this post, we want to talk about the other author Mercy Pilkington featured in her article The Bullies Win: Authors Abandoning Publishing Over Online Behaviors, Nadine Christian.

In her final blog post, Nadine described what happened to her and presented evidence of the nasty emails and messages she received from online trolls.  She also had long conversations with both Mercy and Anne Rice, telling both women what she went through and why she’s quitting:

If being in the public eye led to that sort of vicious — and obvious stalking — was it worth continuing? I love to write, but would putting my work out there be worth the heart ache? The reaction I feel deep down every time I open an email from someone I’m not sure of was starting to give me stomach pains.

She wasn’t bluffing.  She did quit.  If you click on her blog post link, you’ll find this:

BlogRemoved

All we have to say about Nadine’s story is that it’s incredibly sad.  We do, however, have a great deal of respect for Passive Guy’s thoughts on it:

PG

Now, what about Sarah, who claimed over and over in her posts that she was closing up shop and shutting down?  Has she removed her books or her blog?

Nope.

Not only are her books still up in the online bookstores, her blog is still up, only it’s been privatized:

Private

Of course, this doesn’t surprise any of us.
